The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Leaf-strewn path in the snowy woods to inspire you down the path of free educational resources and events for the association management community

Accepting reality. If you know an association professional or board member who needs a wake-up call, this MemberSuite post should do the trick. They urge associations to stop living in limbo and start planning virtual events for 2021. “Resist the magical thinking that if you can hold out long enough, everything will be okay. Pining for the past won’t help, it just limits your vision. In uncertain times, stay focused on your mission and explore new ways to deliver on that mission.”

Online education nimbleness. Let’s say your association has fully accepted reality and wants to help members acquire the skills and knowledge they need right now, but you don’t have the time or money to design new online courses. WBT Systems describes several other options for delivering online education.

Association evolution. Todd Tolbert, CAE, encourages associations to keep plowing forward and embrace change. “This is NOT the time to slow down on your initiatives for the future… That’s what I want for our industry. I want us to embrace this moment in time as a forced proof of concept that we can evolve and move rapidly… take advantage of this crazy time to catch up to how your members, partners and community are currently living.” Hear hear.

CEO skill set. Rasheeda Childress of Associations Now asked Cynthia Mills, FASAE, CAE, (Leaders’ Haven) and Nell Edgington (Social Velocity) about the in-demand skills for today’s CEOs. Some of their observations may surprise you, like a mindset of abundance (that’s my jam), but when you read why, it all makes sense.

Gamification. Gamification makes about as much sense as chocolate-dipped broccoli, says  Adrian Segar at Conferences That Work. I’ve always believed gamification was a waste of association energy, so I’m glad to see I’m not alone.

Quick hits

  • So what is going on with all the acquisitions in the association space? (Jamie Notter, Propel)
  • Ask five Whys to get to the root cause and solve problems. (Peter Vajda, Issues)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer take-out. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • I haven’t had chicken saltimbocca in I don’t know how long, so I bought some prosciutto and provolone, picked some sage, and followed a recipe from Leite’s Culinaria. I didn’t have semolina, so I used flour instead, and added dry vermouth instead of white wine. The leftovers make excellent sandwiches.
  • The next night, a much simpler dish: striped bass (aka rockfish for the DMV folks) fillets baked with lemon juice, Aleppo pepper flakes, garlic powder, and butter. On the side, kale and sweet potato gratin, a favorite we haven’t had for a long time.
  • We went all out for our Super Bowl for two. For pre-game, we enjoyed North Carolina shrimp cocktail. I poached the shrimp in a court bouillon made with the shells, took them out when the broth reached 170°F, put them in a sealable bag and chilled them in an ice bath.
  • A spicy Hawaiian pizza was ready for kick off. My sourdough crust rose in the cool kitchen all day so it was nicely flavored. On the top, tomato sauce, sliced ham, diced pineapple, red onion, red bell pepper, garlic, lots of hot sauce, jalapeño peppers, and provolone/mozzarella cheese.
  • I received a quart of shucked oysters in this week’s fish share so I made Calabash-style fried oysters for halftime—it ended up being enough for two meals because we were pretty full by then. After consulting a few recipes, I came up with a dip of evaporated milk and eggs, and a dredge of 4/1 self-rising flour/cornmeal, salt, paprika, black pepper, and garlic powder. Wow. I’ll make those again.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
