Good reads for the association community

Updating online education content. Keeping education content current is hard when regulations or practices change frequently and your team is already stretched thin. TopClass LMS walks through three approaches that don’t require more staff or budget: design courses in swappable modules, recruit volunteer subject matter experts as a regulatory early-warning system, and use AI to shorten content update cycles.

Post-conference education. Apti explains how to move attendees from annual conference sessions into online courses before their engagement fades. Their advice includes turning session attendance data into course recommendations, structuring asynchronous courses and cohort programs from conference content, offering courses as a registration add-on, and designing courses for completion.

AMS selection. AMS projects drift, stall, or fail when the selection process is driven by feature comparisons instead of strategy. This guide from re:Members describes a five-step process for keeping the AMS search on track: document priorities before talking to a single vendor, factor in budget and capacity constraints, evaluate capabilities against your priorities, build a shortlist, and create a decision brief the board can actually act on.

Need a redo on the CAE exam? CAE Exam Redux, a six-week intensive starting March 25 from Rogue Tulips, is designed specifically for candidates who’ve already seen the exam and need to go deeper, not just review the same material again. You’ll sharpen your Chief Staff Executive judgment and get a stronger grip on the CAE Body of Knowledge in six 90-minute sessions with a small group. Take $25 off by registering with promo code RTBRAINFOOD.

Association AI agents. Why are so many associations wary of AI agents? Mallory Mejias of Sidecar points to data from Anthropic’s 2026 State of AI Agents Report to name the real culprits: fragmented member data spread across systems that don’t talk to each other, and staff resistance that hits smaller organizations harder than larger ones.

Younger trade show attendees. CEIR interviewed 80 Gen Z and young Millennial professionals attending trade shows to find out what they want from the show floor. Mary Tucker of IAEE shared two highlights: they’re coming for something they can’t get behind a screen, and they want to see people they can relate to in the booth—younger booth staff make initial conversations less intimidating.

Event marketing. ExpoLogic’s research-backed guide covers event marketing from registration through post-event follow-up. Their guide covers social proof, early bird campaigns, personalized outreach, landing pages, abandoned registrations, post-event surveys, and more. It’s worth downloading if registrations have been flat—or you’re worried they’re heading that way.

Membership value in the AI era. While associations are still figuring out what to do about AI, members have already changed how they work: pulling information together on their own, forming opinions faster, and figuring out how to solve problems without the association in the middle. Chris Vaughan, Ph.D. of Sequence Consulting writes in Associations Now that the real work ahead is deciding where the association still needs to be central to what members do and where it doesn’t.

Event setup/marketing with AI. Ellyssa Valenti Kroski of the New York Law Institute built an AI agent that automates her library’s entire event setup process: registration for a Zoom meeting, website posting, and email marketing. She describes using Zapier to build it, precautions she took, and other tasks associations could handle the same way.

Association Brain Food takes about six hours a week to put together. If it saves you time finding good reads and CAE credits—or just makes your Friday better—I’d love for you to buy me a beer.

Please buy me a craft beer!

You never grow old at the table

I don’t recall ever being disappointed by a Nigella Lawson recipe, so no surprise this Spanish chicken, chorizo and potato tray bake is a keeper. I did swap in linguiça for chorizo. On the side, roasted broccoli with red onion and garlic powder.

Long ago, I found a recipe called Accidental Fish, but after making it once, it made its way to the bottom of a Word folder. This time, I made it with flounder, butter, garlic, tomatoes, lemon juice, Louisiana-style hot sauce, and chives. On the side, collards and radish greens sautéed with bacon, onion, carrot, red bell pepper, jalapeño, garlic, and chicken broth.

About CAE credits: Per ASAE, “any continuing professional education offered by any professional entity may be accepted toward the [CAE] professional development requirement as long as it is directly related to either association or nonprofit management as defined by the CAE exam content outline.”

Education providers: If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
