Association Brain Food: 7.12.24

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Jones Hole Canyon trail near Vernal in northeastern Utah – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Curiosity. Anne-Laure Le Cunff at Ness Labs says curiosity keeps you young, helps you learn, and fosters better relationships. She describes nine habits that help curious people grow personally and professionally. She calls these habits the “curiosity matrix.” I see them as “nine rules for better living.”

Email benchmarks and tactics. Here’s a must-read for association membership and marketing professionals: PropFuel’s email engagement benchmarking report, which is based on nearly 13 million emails they sent in 2023. The report includes benchmark data, trends, and advice for improving email practices and campaigns, plus association stories showing the impact of PropFuel’s recommended email tactics on their membership and marketing goals.

Event marketing. 360 Live Media introduces the 6 R’s Framework for increasing event attendance: relevance, reach, retention, reputation, revenue, and ROI. They discuss challenges related to each R and suggest advice and metrics to address each of these pain points and guide your future event planning.

Membership renewal. Besides sharing useful advice about renewal campaigns, Katrina Ciccarelli McAfee at Association Analytics explains how to use the data you already have for more effective renewal messaging. This post reminded me of the extent to which membership marketing tools and tactics have improved in the last several years—so many new things to try.

AI policy. Cimatri shares a sample ‘starter’ policy for responsible AI use. Because it’s licensed under Creative Commons, you can share and adapt it as your organization’s AI maturity grows.

AI consultants. Rahim Hirji says everyone’s an AI expert these days, so beware. Sidebar: I can vouch for the consultants at Cimatri, in case you were wondering.

Association magazines. m3Magazines offers advice for transforming your magazine into a valuable resource for members. They start by reviewing the benefits of a well-crafted print magazine—in case you need to make a case to your leadership team. They also explain how to develop a content strategy, identify the best time for a redesign, decrease costs, and increase revenue.

You never grow old at the table

We had a bunch of friends and family over for a 4th of July cookout. I made corn salad—no recipe, but it includes bacon, red bell pepper, sweet onion, garlic, fresh corn off the cob (with its juice), and tomato, tossed with a dressing of lemon juice, rice wine vinegar, and fresh basil.

Another accompaniment to burgers and dogs: cole slaw made with green and red cabbage, carrot, sweet onion, and red bell pepper. Some members of my family don’t like mayo (tragic, I know!), so I make my dressing with lime juice, rice wine vinegar, cilantro, hot sauce, and regular olive oil (not extra-virgin).

Nowadays, I never buy extra-virgin olive oil. Because I mainly use olive oil for sautéing or roasting, I buy large jugs of regular olive oil from Costco or BJ’s. I don’t need the more strongly flavored and expensive extra-virgin oil for cooking.

With the leftover corn salad, I made pasta with hot Italian sausage, jalapeño, onion, chard stems, garlic chives, chard leaves, corn salad, evaporated milk, parmesan, pasta water, butter, and fresh basil. Heavy cream is pretty pricy these days too. I keep a bunch of small cans of evaporated milk in the cupboard in case I only need a half cup of cream for a dish. I probably wouldn’t use it if cream was a dominant flavor, but in this case, the cream merely enriches the sauce.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

The American flag on top of Chimney Rock in NC – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Association podcasts. Dave Coriale of DelCor and the Reboot IT podcast started a Linked group, Society of Association Podcasters. He’s inviting association podcasters to share their latest episodes there and you to share episodes you recommend for association professionals and industry partners.

Board development. Lowell Aplebaum and his team at Vista Cova published an excellent report on strategies and practices to prepare your board for effective governance. He gathered these unique approaches for pre-orientation engagement, orientation, and ongoing development from interviews with 35 association leaders. The appendix includes an extensive library of board training resources from 25 associations.

Board stewardship. Board members have to think of themselves as stewards who leave their association better positioned for the future than they found it. In a series of articles (part 1, part 2, and part 3) at Naylor’s Association Adviser, Jeff De Cagna describes the elements and imperatives of board stewardship. Share this insightful series with your board—hopefully, it will change your association’s approach to governance and the future.

Small-staff membership marketing. YourMembership offers guidance on membership marketing for small associations, including tips on personalized communication, joining and renewing procedures, new member onboarding, online communities, and online career centers.

Content curation. In one of my past association jobs, members raved most about our daily curated news update—articles we found and selected for multifamily homebuilders and their industry partners. I bet your members would love this valuable benefit too. You like this weekly update, right? Ann Gynn at Content Marketing Institute explains how to deliver curated content to your audience.

Membership models. Tony Rossell of Marketing General Inc. thinks the days of one-size-fits-all membership are over. You’re more likely to attract and keep members with either a combination or tiered membership structure.

Workplace challenges. This member research report from Halmyre Strategies describes the challenges faced by various professions as a new generation enters the workforce: burnout, work-life balance, client demands, doubt about the value of credentials, diversity, and changing workforce roles. They describe how associations can address these issues while meeting the changing needs of professionals.

Microlearning. Tracy King at InspirEd says, “Microlearning thrives within its own ecosystem, in a community of interconnected content. When done right, it’s a powerful tool that drives both business and learning outcomes.” She describes seven roles microlearning can play in your association’s learning portfolio.

Talking AI with your board. Patrick Glaser at McKinley Advisors explains how to discuss AI with your board. He suggests starting with discussions about the impact of AI on your association and industry, and outlining a strategy for AI.

You never grow old at the table

Last week, a new one-pan recipe turned into a keeper: speckled sea trout Thai green curry with green beans over basmati rice from The Fish Store: Recipes and Recollections by Lindsey Bareham.

We went to the beach (Salter Path, NC) for the weekend and had tomato sandwiches (brought from home), shrimp burgers, shrimp melts, and fried flounder. On our way out, we bought—what else—more local NC shrimp. For Sunday dinner, I made a pasta version of this New York Times recipe (archived free version): summer shrimp scampi with tomatoes and corn. I added onion and red bell pepper to the pan, cooked the shrimp last, and added several ladles of pasta water at the end—plus linguine.

On the side, zucchini and summer squash pesto with red bell pepper, broccoli stem, carrot, and onion.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

wooden walkway over the dunes to the beach – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityWorkforce trends. Association Latinos requests five minutes of your time to get your thoughts on workforce trends in association management. This survey will help them assess inclusivity, equity, and overall well-being in our field. The findings will bridge existing gaps and provide benchmarks for professional development and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Membership. It’s pretty much impossible to renew a disengaged member, says Fíonta. Their useful advice on member engagement and renewal is bound to increase your association’s retention rate. Even if you don’t have sophisticated software, you can put these tactics to work.

Industry partner trouble. When a website development firm went out of business, several association industry partners jumped to the rescue and helped the firm’s ghosted association clients figure out their options for saving and restoring their sites. In an Association Tech Insider episode, they discuss how associations can better manage responsibilities and relationships with industry partners and what you should do to protect your best interests.

Association podcasts. After you add that episode to your queue, check out five podcast episodes that KiKi L’Italien enjoyed recently.

LMS selection. In recent years, thousands of entrepreneurs and for- and non-profit organizations started online learning businesses. The learning management system (LMS) market has exploded in response. To help you sift through the options, D2L’s buyers guide for associations offers advice on the LMS selection process and walks you through the different system features, capabilities, and support services you’ll encounter out there.

AMS selection. In organizing two Ven-Cons, 501Works has demonstrated their commitment to improving association and AMS partner relationships. They just published the AMS/CRM System Selection Process Survey Results, which shows what 200+ associations and their vendor and consultant partners experience during system selection. Use this information to plan realistic project timelines, learn from the experiences of others, select vendors, and assemble project teams.

Membership. Aptify shares 50 ways to boost member recruitment and retention. See if you can spot anything new that might work for your association.

Online attendee engagement. Workshop participants told Amanda Kaiser that online attendees are more challenging to engage than any other segment, so she’s sharing advice on hosting super engaging virtual meetings.

Member engagement. To understand and get close to your members, follow marketing technology trends. Huh? Yes, says .orgCommunity, because you don’t know what you can do with data unless someone on staff keeps up with what’s possible and knows how to take advantage of the tech you have.

Membership course. Association Brain Food readers can earn up to 10 CAE credits with Chris Gloede’s popular live 10-week Association Academy Member Growth Certificate Course for only $499 with Brain Food promo code ACADEMY (a $50 discount). You never grow old at the table

On a hot summer night, blackened catfish tacos hit the spot. I serve mine with salsa, avocado, and a simple no-mayo slaw (cabbage, carrot, red bell pepper, sweet onion, lime juice, rice wine vinegar, vegetable oil, and cilantro). The blackened spice mix includes smoked paprika, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, ground ancho chile, cayenne, black pepper, and salt.

On the side, nopalitos (cactus pads) with tomato and onion—an experiment with a jar of nopalitos. I added fresh cilantro and oregano to the recipe. Although I drained and rinsed the nopalitos, they still tasted too pickled for me, but my husband loved them. I prefer the fresh sautéed nopalitos I enjoyed at a Mexican restaurant (Oaxaca) in Sedona. Their flavor resembles green beans.

Sunday, we had a tailgate before the Outlaw Music Festival, which I highly recommend because Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are AMAZING. Lukas Nelson (sitting in for his sick dad, Willie) is also fantastic, and a much stronger singer than his dad these days, with some excellent songs of his own. Earlier in the day, I made spicy Korean pork BBQ in the pressure cooker and served it alongside leftover slaw in hamburger buns and tortillas. Thankfully, we had enough leftovers for another night because it’s sooooo good.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Moonshine Arch outside Vernal UT inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityMembership reset. A new report from McKinley Advisors got me thinking about the role of membership in associations. Too often, membership “just is.” Yup. “Membership lacks focus and intentionality in execution.” You’ll nod along as the report describes challenges (especially #2) we’ve put up with for way too long. They also suggest next steps, based on client and for-profit research, for delivering your membership promise, for example, infusing community and connection in everything you do.

Inclusion. Which vibe does your association give off? Velvet rope or come party with me? Inspired by a few evening ramblings, Elizabeth Engel of Spark Consulting asks you to examine the impression your association and membership experience are giving to those on the outside looking in. I know which vibe (and bar) I prefer.

AI and events. eShow describes the impact of AI on events and the challenges you must address when using AI. On the plus side, they explain how AI enhances marketing campaigns, personalizes the attendee experience, improves event security, and assists sustainability initiatives.

Content marketing. At Animalz, Ryan Law describes how to find helpful topics for your blog. When you’ve run out of ideas about “general first-order pain points,” write about “more specific second-order pain points, the ones occurring at the same time as first-order pains for the same people.” Here’s another argument for not publishing generic SEO-driven drivel and, instead, helping people solve problems and envision opportunities.

Association trends. The outlook for associations is optimistic, per Marketing General Inc.’s 2024 Association Economic Outlook Report. But a few data points trouble me. Two-thirds of associations plan to develop new products/services, yet only one-third of them plan to hire more staff. They better be proficient at phasing out programs. Also, most associations have abandoned virtual events—a missed opportunity for extending their reach and demonstrating inclusiveness to people who can’t or won’t attend in-person meetings.

Membership course. Association Brain Food readers can earn up to 10 CAE credits from Chris Gloede’s popular 10-week Association Academy Member Growth Certificate Course—only $499 with Brain Food promo code ACADEMY (a $50 discount). Thanks to this course, over 1,000 association executives have learned how to conduct research, develop relevant benefits, establish member content gates, improve recruitment and retention campaigns, and grow membership. You never grow old at the table

Last week, I made pan-seared almaco jack with green curry sauce (keeper!) from Nancie McDermott’s Quick & Easy Thai: 70 Everyday Recipes, along with a package of 90-second jasmine rice. On the side, the standard roasted broccoli and red onion, but this time I tossed it with a spice mix my brother made us for Christmas. I’ve no idea what’s in there, but the broccoli was better than usual.

For Sunday dinner, my southwest skillet—shorthand for a mix of ground chorizo and turkey, sweet potato, spinach and beet greens, onion, poblano, red bell, jalapeño, garlic, black beans, corn, chipotle en adobo, spicy spices, cilantro, and cheese.

Event marketing. Fíonta shares eleven effective marketing strategies for boosting event attendance. You’ll find a few different and intriguing ideas to consider in this one.

AI for associations. In Nimble’s AI success kit, you get four resources: two 30-minute webinar recordings about AI for associations and two white papers, an introduction to AI for associations and a guide to developing an AI strategy.

AI acceleration. At Noema, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt discusses where AI is headed, when to “pull the plug,” and how to cope with China and other evil players. This post resonates with a sometimes scary but excellent book I’m reading now, The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century’s Greatest Dilemma by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of the AI company DeepMind, which was acquired by Google.

Non-dues revenue. Patti Callahan at Association Analytics describes a data-empowered method for thinking outside the traditional non-dues revenue box and shares examples from associations that are leading the way.

Membership app. Bulletin describes how a membership app helps improve engagement by providing a centralized communication channel for members. A mobile app is a tangible daily reminder of membership value. Plus, unlike social media channels, your association controls your app.

SEO for AI-powered search results. Jim Yu at Content Marketing Institute explains how to adapt your SEO and content strategies for Google’s new AI Overviews and AI-powered search rankings.

You never grow old at the table

Last week, we loved deviled bluefish with coconut-spiked coleslaw, recipes from chef Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood Joint in Durham NC. I baked the fish instead of grilling it, added red bell and jalapeño pepper to the slaw, used regular (instead of preserved) lemon zest, and omitted the chervil. Next time, I’ll add pineapple and/or orange bits to the slaw.

I thought speckled sea trout with red chili and pecans would go well with our leftover slaw—and it did. The link to the original recipe on Serious Eats no longer works, but this copycat recipe has the details.

Sunday afternoon happy hour at my sister-in-law’s led to a visit on the way home to our local brewery, but luckily I had a quick sheet pan meal in mind for dinner: sheet pan Italian sausages with grapes and broccoli rabe. I added red onion and garlic powder to the mix, and served everything on top of polenta, aka Italian grits. Long ago, I copied the Washington Post recipe to Word since I’m no longer a subscriber. If you’re not a subscriber, check out the archived version.

If you’d like to subscribe, please complete the form in the sidebar or at the bottom of this post. I won’t share or sell your email address.

If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

big horn sheep along the creek on the Jones Hole trail in northeastern Utah – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Generative AI. AI content is short-term arbitrage, not a long-term content marketing strategy, says Ryan Law at Ahrefs. Google doesn’t look kindly on AI-infused content. You won’t stand out in your market or connect and build trust with your audience if you’re publishing mediocre AI-generated content. I’ve got room in my schedule for another client if you’d rather share the expertise and experience of a real human.

Strategic advice. Once again, Dean West of Association Laboratory applies lessons learned from his European travels to aspects of association management, such as anticipating setbacks, building on and updating earlier structures, seeking guidance, understanding roles, and finding time for an aperitivo or two.

Event technology. For their event technology buyer’s guide, EventMobi interviewed 20 association event professionals to better understand the most time-consuming challenges when buying event technology—a good thing to know when starting a selection project. They share insights on what you should look for in a technology partner, key questions to ask potential vendors, and purchasing mistakes to avoid.

Google rankings. The SEO community is buzzing about the internal Google documents leaked to the founder of an SEO software company. Tim Metz at Animalz shares the biggest takeaway: “original, helpful content beats copycat fluff.” He wisely advises writing for readers, not for SEO algorithms.

Annual conferences. Redesigning your annual conference is risky but you have to keep appealing to new audiences as they enter and make their way through the workplace. Kara Nacarato at Event Garde offers advice on balancing tradition and innovation when reinventing the annual conference experience.

Membership. A few common issues come up in GrowthZone’s latest association survey report. One is the difficulty of proving the value of membership to prospects and members. Another is persuading members to make time for association engagement. The report spotted a lack of intention in solving these issues: most associations admit to not having documented plans for member engagement, young professional recruitment and lapsed member reengagement. Seems like a good place to start.

Event sunsetting. Chamber Pros Community describes how to use data to assess whether an event is still serving your chamber, chapter, or association.

AI detection. Last summer, MIT researchers advised not relying on AI detection tools to determine whether someone used ChatGPT because of false positives. But many companies still think these tools work. Josh Bernoff says generative AI platforms write with an “accent,” that’s how you spot suspect content.

You never grow old at the table

My fish market recommended this satisfying recipe: pan-seared blueline tilefish with mushrooms, asparagus, and onions. Despite what the recipe says, just use one pan to sauté the mushrooms, onions, and asparagus all at the same time. I added garlic to the recipe and increased all the amounts because I had one pound of tilefish fillets.

The next night, we had pan-seared lemon-pepper yellowfin tuna steaks. Avoid god-knows-what and make your own lemon-pepper seasoning from lemon zest, freshly ground black pepper, and salt. I added a big, smooshed garlic clove to the oil as it was heating up and sprinkled lemon juice over the steaks as they were cooking.

For Sunday breakfast, we had this tasty dish: baked eggs with salsa verde. I used Muenster cheese instead of Monterey Jack because we had some in the frig. I’ve made salsa verde a few different ways but never in a blender like this. The leftover salsa is doing wonders for my breakfast burritos.

For dinner on Sunday, I made Ina Garten’s skillet-roasted chicken and potatoes from her cookbook, Modern Comfort Food. Delicious as you would expect from Ina. My only change: adding rosemary in addition to the recommended thyme. On the side, roasted broccoli, orange cauliflower, and purple cauliflower with red onion and garlic powder.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

sun-dabbled view of a trail through the woods – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Humans vs AI. At The Atlantic, Tyler Austin Harper highlights the big AI risk not enough people are seeing: “We need to adopt a more sophisticated approach to artificial intelligence, one that allows us to distinguish… which uses of artificial intelligence expand our basic human capabilities, and which cultivate incompetence and incapacity under the guise of empowerment.”

Connections. When flying, my nose is usually buried in my Kindle. But last week, I enjoyed chatting with the mature 12-year-old sitting next to me who was enjoying her book while traveling home on her own. Amanda Lea Kaiser describes how these conversations with strangers are often deep, meaningful, and life-changing. I’m looking forward to the rest of her series about helping strangers (members) connect—and wonder what my young seatmate took away from our chat.

Membership renewals. Impexium dives deep into the details of membership renewals, such as the difference between retention and renewal, metrics, reasons members don’t renew, and, best of all, solutions for your association’s renewal challenges.

Sunsetting. Hannah Carvalho at Associations Now shares the advice of Jennifer Blenkle of the American Physiological Society and Ankur Ponda of McKinley Advisors on how to build a smart sunsetting strategy for products and programs. So important if you want to make space for new initiatives.

Event design. At The Meeting Magazines, Lee Gimpel of Better Meetings and other planners offer excellent advice for using intentional design to improve your events. Lee said, “Being intentional requires thought, but a lot of events skip true intention-setting and then spend a lot of time and thought on details that aren’t connected to the purpose.”

Association videos. VideoRequest describes how associations use video to increase brand awareness, raise funds, engage volunteers, and promote events.

Content workflow. Jodi Harris at Content Marketing Institute explains how to map workflows for each content format and variation your team regularly produces. She also describes content processes that remove friction, confusion, and inefficiencies and make production more manageable.

You never grow old at the table

It’s worth dragging out your slow cooker for this recipe from The Complete Slow Cooker by America’s Test Kitchen: Thai green curry with shrimp and sweet potatoes. So good. My adaptations: double the amount of green curry paste and add red bell and jalapeño pepper, onion, garlic, spinach, and a garnish of chopped peanuts. Serve over brown rice.

Here’s one for leftover jars of salsa. Sprinkle filets of speckled sea trout with garlic powder, s/p, and lime juice. Top with salsa and guacamole salsa. Bake. Garnish with chopped cilantro. On the side, the usual roasted broccoli with red onion, garlic powder, and s/p.

They start by reviewing the benefits of a well-crafted print magazine—in case you need to make a case to your leadership team. They also explain how to develop a content strategy, identify the best time for a redesign, decrease costs, and increase revenue.

Association boards. Ten years ago, Jeff De Cagna introduced a new charge for association boards: the duty of foresight. At Naylor’s Association Adviser, he explains why this essential responsibility is still seen as a radical idea. Associations won’t survive the next ten years unless their boards take this duty seriously.
