Association Brain Food: 1.12.24

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

hay rolls in the snow – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Free education. If you’re a regular reader of Association Brain Food, this post from TopClass LMS will be familiar ground for you. They share sources of free education for association professionals, including niche membership organizations, events, webinars and podcasts for the association community.

Inspiration. Have you forgotten you have a job and career with purpose? Need to reignite your spark? Read this post by Peter Houstle of Mariner Management about The Power of “A”—this time, “A” refers to Association People.

Scientific society events. ExOrdo shares key findings from their interviews with 27 scholarly societies about event goals, programs and challenges. They discuss the growth of international online audiences, challenges with online networking and engagement, online content libraries and more.

AI bubble. At Locus, Cory Doctorow says, “Of course AI is a bubble.” But the question is: what kind? He describes the two kinds of tech bubbles—the ones that leave something behind and the ones that leave nothing behind—and where AI fits. His interesting perspective is one I hadn’t seen before, well worth a read.

Team questions. I love seeing questions that are meant to knock everyone off balance and look at situations in a new light. Karin Hurt and David Dye at Let’s Grow Leaders share seven assumption busters to propel your team’s strategic thinking.

Young member engagement. I know you see a lot of posts about young professionals, but this one from Belinda Moore at Strategic Membership Solutions is worth your time. She shares strategies for enhancing engagement and fostering a more inclusive environment for younger members.

Member mobile app. Bulletin describes how a member app helps you nurture member engagement by providing a centralized communication channel for your members. Unlike social media platforms, your association controls your mobile app platform—a tangible reminder of membership benefits.

Dirty data. Bill Conforti at Association Analytics shares six tips to transform your association’s dirty data in 2024. You might not have given serious thought to these doable ideas, but you definitely should take the advice of people who live and breathe data every day.

Wait, there’s more

WTF is the fediverse? (Kimeko McCoy, Digiday)

The rules have changed. Starting in 2024, Google will require bulk senders to authenticate their emails, allow for easy unsubscribes and stay under a reported spam threshold. (Neil Kumaran, Google)

All futurism is Afrofuturism: Though overlooked now, Africa will shape the 21st century due to its expanding population and current poverty. (Noah Smith)

What’s the best time to eat dinner? Your sleep and work quality/productivity depend on the right answer. (Julie Jargon, Wall Street Journal—gift link)

You never grow old at the table

Buying cheese and deli meat at Costco means finding ways to use the surplus, which is why I made Goat Cheese and Prosciutto Stuffed Chicken Breasts. I pounded the breasts so they were easier to roll around the filling. But they’re really easy to overcook, so be careful. On the side, a sauté of Brussels sprouts with bacon, mushroom and red bell pepper.

The other big dish this past week was flounder and vermilion snapper with collards in a coconut green curry sauce, served over 90-second jasmine rice. It’s originally based on this Cooking Light recipe, but I’ve been making it so long I have my own version that includes red bell pepper, garlic, collards, mint and cilantro.

If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Association Brain Food: 1.5.24

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

On the edge of a mowed field, the branches of two trees are frosted with ice – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Reflection time. It’s never too late to review and reflect upon the past year and make plans and promises to yourself for the year ahead. To help you along, Britt Andreatta shares ten reflective questions to launch 2024.

Predictions for 2024. What’s on the horizon for associations in 2024? TopClass LMS describes what they see in their crystal ball, particularly for professional development programs.

AMS requirements. Impexium shares the requirements most likely found on the AMS wish list of association executives. I’m glad most of these deal with strategic considerations that position associations for the future, rather than technical functionality offered by most systems.

Member segmentation. Dave Will at PropFuel has a lot to say about the low bar of member data segmentation. If you want a meaningful connection or relationship with members, you have to get more granular—and he explains how.

Learning about AI. A post with curated resources is right up my alley, so I’m happy to highlight this one from Amith Nagarajan at Sidecar. He shares five resources for getting up to speed and staying informed about AI.

Non-dues revenue. The State Bar of Texas partnered with Lead Marvels to provide an online resource library for members that generated $160,000 in revenue for the association—plus lots of leads for their sponsors.

Hot association topics. TopClass LMS analyzed their social media analytics to find out which of their posts resonated most with the association community in 2023. If any of these topics are on your mind, you’ll find lots of good reads on their blog.

You never grow old at the table

Good times for me in the kitchen over the holidays. I made my eggnog with bourbon this year instead of brandy and dark rum—and loved it. I’ve been making this nog recipe for decades, but change is good, right?

Right before Christmas, I bought Nigella Lawson’s Christmas cookbook, which inspired many dishes on my Christmas Eve menu. The ladies enjoyed Poinsettias to start the evening—the guys stuck with beer. I’ll definitely make her party prosciutto bundles and double blue canapés again.

I was going to make Nigella’s cranberry- and soy-glazed cocktail sausages for New Year’s Eve snacking, but we were too full from our seafood dinner, so I made them as a New Year’s afternoon snack for me and Jim. I’ll make them again when I need a potluck app.

On Christmas Eve, I served garlic bread, tortellini with sausage in a tomato cream sauce, and roasted broccoli with red onion and garlic powder.

For dessert, sticky toffee pudding (wow) and modern mince pie (a favorite of me and my mum). My cookie assortment included pecan butter balls, my favorite chocolate chip cookies and molasses crinkles.

On Christmas morning, I made brioche French toast. I’m looking forward to the leftovers in the freezer.

New Year’s Day is Jim’s birthday, so I made one of his favorites (and mine), coq au vin with mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli, again. It only takes 1-1/2 hours in the oven compared to many more in the slow cooker and tastes just as good.

Lightening things up, finally, we had blackened red drum one night. My spice mix included smoked paprika, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, ground ancho chile, cayenne, black pepper and salt. Another night, I prepared two chipotle salmon salads. I coated the fish in chipotle powder, cumin, cinnamon, allspice, salt and pepper. I warmed up corn and black beans with southwest spices and cilantro. My other salad toppings were avocado, roasted red bell pepper, sweet onion, broccoli, tomatoes, radish, celery and carrot.

If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Association Brain Food: 12.22.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

cozy Christmas candle – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communitySince webinars are winding down, this will be the last Association Brain Food for the year. I’ll be back on Friday, January 5. Until then, thank you for spending time with me here. I wish you and your loved ones a most joyful, loving, cozy and relaxing holiday season. Merry Christmas!

12 Days of Staycation. Are you taking time off during the holidays? If so, consider dedicating a day or more to a staycation as described by TopClass LMS. They explain how to plan and prepare for a staycation that’s more enjoyable and rewarding than normal days off. I particularly recommend Days 6, 7, 9 and 12.

Sponsorships. Bruce Rosenthal and Lori Zoss Kraska recommend scheduling regular conversations with your sponsors. In this post, they suggest questions to ask sponsors in the first quarter of 2024 and information you should share with them about your association. This cheat sheet of sorts helps you move from transactional sponsorships to transformational partnerships.

Event gamification. EventMobi explains the psychology behind gamification. They describe strategies for applying game mechanics to influence attendee behavior, including incentives and technology that help you achieve event goals.

Member onboarding. Tracy King of InspirEd describes the advantages of microlearning for your new member onboarding process. She says, “Microlearning can deliver a personalized choose-your-adventure experience incentivizing calls to action that help new members access their member benefits and feel the belonging within your professional community.”

AI for associations. Fíonta provides a recap of a recent UST webinar in which their co-founder Dr. Lisa Rau described ways associations can leverage AI, risks of using AI and guidelines for implementing AI responsibly.

AMS selection checklist. GrowthZone put together an AMS buyer’s guide with a feature/functionality checklist to help you decide what you need vs. what would be nice to have. The guide also describes vendor, training/support, data access and software issues to consider before signing a contract.

Industry analysis for members. Per MGI’s membership benchmarking survey, members rely on their associations for in-depth industry analysis. Bill Sheehan at Multiview explains the basics of creating valuable industry reports.

You never grow old at the table

Here’s an extremely satisfying dish for a cozy chilly night: coq au vin. You can make it in a slow cooker as the recipe instructs or do it on the stovetop, which is what I did for 1-1/2 hours—probably didn’t need that long. On the side, mashed potatoes and steamed green beans.

For leftover coq au vin and potatoes, I enhanced the green beans with sautéed red onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic, and chicken broth.

Trying to make room in the freezer, I grabbed a pound each of yellowfin and bigeye tuna for my kicked-up tuna pasta casserole. I know it’s a travesty to freeze amazingly fresh tuna. But when I’m out of town and can’t pick up my weekly seafood share, they freeze it. What better excuse to use it than for this retro comfort-food casserole? Yeah, way better than mum’s.

If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Association Brain Food: 12.15.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

cozy Christmas street – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityAssociation management. I’ve been dipping into Associations Evolve 2024—find it on the front page of Answers for Associations. Editor Belinda Moore describes it as including “more than 50 association thought leaders from around the world [who] have contributed inspirational insights, practical tips, and motivational stories to get you fired up for 2024.” So far, reading an article here and there, I’m liking it.

Career flux. TopClass LMS describes how assumptions about careers don’t always hold up now. With constant change and uncertainty, we need a flux mindset to survive and thrive. They explain what that means and how associations can help members adopt a flux mindset and a portfolio approach to their careers.

Mentoring program. “While starting a mentoring program isn’t rocket science, there’s certainly an art to it.” With 20 years of experience developing mentoring programs, Art of Mentoring knows both the art and science. They describe the seven steps of starting a successful association mentoring program from pre-evaluation and research to planning, design, recruitment, matching, training, support, and evaluation.

Board responsibilities. At Naylor, Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First describes three actions that boards, CEOs, and other decision-makers should implement “over the next 12 months to begin addressing the challenges facing their associations, stakeholders, and successors in the decade ahead.” He says these initiatives will have an immediate beneficial impact on your association.

Lives of Gen Z and millennials. Juliana Kaplan at Business Insider describes how Gen Z and millennial parents are struggling right now. Make sure your association’s messaging and expectations reflect their reality.

Online communities. Since associations are communities, it’s good to know what community experts believe is on the horizon. This Guild report on online community trends put together by Michelle Goodall focuses on brands, but many of the trends pertain to associations and their communities too.

Online communities, again. Research tells us over and over that members join associations primarily to connect with and learn from other members. It’s the primary reason I belong to ASAE, which is why I think online communities are a must for associations—plus they’re extremely popular with younger audiences too. Nimble AMS explains how an online community helps you attract, engage, and retain members. The guide also provides a useful plan for launching and managing a community.

Membership experience. Our approach to membership needs something radically different—and the approach suggested by Amanda Lea Kaiser is not so hard. You just have to take time to pause and think about it the way she suggests.

Event networking. At Texas SAE’s Association Leadership, Miguel Neves of Skift Meetings describes a human way to boost event networking: networking ambassadors. He saw the idea in action at the Social Media Market World conference.

Gen Z and subscriptions. PYMNTS reports that Tinder is promoting short-term subscriptions for Gen Z. If Gen Z is hesitant to invest in year-long association memberships, maybe a short-term subscription is a better option.

Off-topic

On Twitter, I found this lovely, heart-warming story about Jimmy Stewart’s WWII service and performance in It’s A Wonderful Life, one of our favorite Christmas movies. In case you’re wondering, White Christmas tops my list.

During the holiday season, let’s not forget the Israelis who are missing the company of their loved ones held hostage by Hamas. I think about Naama Levy every single day. Is she dead or alive? Who knows, but once you’ve seen the video of her being dragged around by Hamas terrorists, it’s impossible to get her out of your mind. Her mother, Ayelet Levy-Shachar, wrote a heart-rending article about Naama and the other hostages for The Free Press. Please pray for these poor souls.

You never grow old at the table

My seafood share is on holiday break, so I’ve had the chance to enjoy wild salmon—not an NC fish so never sold by my fish shop. One of my favorite salmon dishes is chipotle salmon. On the side, I fried up the last of our green tomatoes before an overnight freeze decimated the plants.

A fairly quick one-pot dish for a cozy night: tortellini with Italian sausage in a tomato cream sauce. My version was originally inspired by this recipe. You cook the tortellini in the sauce so there’s no need to dirty another pot. I doubled the recipe except for the canned tomatoes and tortellini. I used sweet and hot Italian sausage; added red and orange bell pepper, mushrooms, basil, and oregano; used homemade marinara sauce; and omitted the chicken broth. Sometimes I add spinach but forgot this time.

On the side, an asparagus sauté with green onions, lemon zest, and parmesan cheese.

Association Brain Food: 12.8.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

field with bank of trees on a cold misty day – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Mental health. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen many headlines about the rise in mental health issues. People talk about it in the association world, but how many associations actually provide resources and education about mental health issues to members and industry employers? TopClass LMS explains why and how associations should step up their efforts and shares examples of associations who have.

Mobile apps. Results Direct and .orgCommunity released the first and most comprehensive report on mobile apps in the association community, which includes data on how associations and their members are using mobile apps. An app can help you solve what survey participants said was the biggest challenge for associations: communicating the value of membership.

Member app. Another advantage of an app: it’s a centralized communication channel to your members, unlike social media platforms your association doesn’t own. Bulletin describes how a member app helps you nurture member engagement.

Member retention. Mark Lowry at Association Analytics shares helpful member retention strategies. He takes a data-oriented approach to planning, measuring, and improving retention practices.

Zoom fatigue. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant said, “Zoom fatigue is not burnout. It’s boreout.” Research shows: “when meetings are virtual, we’re not overwhelmed—we’re understimulated. Cardiac measures show drowsiness, not stress.” The solution: “fewer, shorter, more interactive online meetings.” Keep these findings in mind when planning staff and member online meetings and educational programs, including conferences.

Gen Z careers. Katie Notopoulos at Business Insider shares findings from a survey of 16- to 26-year-olds: one out of three believe the best way to build wealth is to work for themselves instead of a traditional employer. Granted, that’s only one-third, but what effect will this have on Gen Z’s desire to join or get involved with associations?

Marketing to Gen Z and millennials. If you’re determined to market more effectively to younger generations, here’s some help. Mercury Creative Group explains how to build an association brand that attracts and builds the loyalty of young members.

You never grow old at the table

I’ve never made a beef brisket but decided to give it a try after seeing this lauded recipe on Leite’s Culinaria by cookbook store owner Nach Rachman. Since my brisket was only 2-1/2 pounds, I added only four onions to the pot but increased the carrots to three. Next time, I’ll trim more of the fat, but, oh my, I wish there were more leftovers. A keeper.

The blog recommends roasted potatoes with dill as a side. We munched on lots of these while waiting for the brisket to finish. Another keeper. I also made the usual roasted broccoli with red onion and garlic powder. No, we never get sick of it.

When time was short one night, I defrosted a roasted pork loin and served it with leftover cranberry chutney from Thanksgiving. The pork recipe (arista al forno) came from the cookbook Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner. You rub the loin with a mix of garlic, sea salt, ground fennel, and pepper. While it’s roasting, add a cup of white wine to the pan for basting. Excellent.

With the leftover whole black sea bass and perch I mentioned last week, I made Provencal seafood bisque with shrimp. I really felt like lobster bisque, so the soup was good, but it wasn’t lobster.

Association Brain Food: 12.1.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

sunset in the North Carolina mountains – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Grassroots advocacy. TopClass LMS explains how education programs can help your association’s grassroots advocacy efforts. When members better understand your association’s legislative and regulatory priorities and their role in achieving those goals, they can more confidently make an effective case with policymakers.

Project success stories. Good things happen when you have good relationships with technology partners. Sherry Budziak of .orgSource recaps accomplishments and lessons learned by the association execs and tech partners who shared their project stories at Solutions Day.

Member recruitment. To attract young members, you must recruit in ways that make sense to them. Impexium recommends proving you’re an organization they can trust, delivering benefits they value, and having processes and systems that facilitate member referrals, new member onboarding, testimonials, social presence, and member feedback.

Content calendars. Trust me, when you don’t know which direction your content is going, the publishing process comes to a halt. Seen it! Hilary Marsh explains the why, what, and how of content calendars and how to choose the best one for your organization.

Gen Z. Rikki Schlott says her generation (Gen Z) has inherited a post-hope world stripped of what matters. All the things that traditionally made life worth living—love, community, country, faith, work, and family—have been “debunked.” She explains what happened to her generation when their social lives moved onto smartphones—depressing but valuable insight for associations.

Conference/abstract management. Ex Ordo describes how to implement conference and abstract management software for medical, technical, scientific, and academic society events. Their guide covers configuring software for abstract submission and peer review, issuing the call for papers, designing the conference program, and more.

LinkedIn. Mark Schaefer explains why you need to ditch LinkedIn as your primary content platform. His points make sense, although he’s not suggesting you stop using LinkedIn.

Off-topic

Noticing a pervasive disregard for the Constitution? That’s on us, says Jay Cost at The Dispatch. From the Electoral College to the Senate, reforms to our founding charters are possible without amendments.

At The Free Press, venture capitalist Katherine Boyle describes how a dynamic vision can win the fight for America, instead of “letting doomsayers, technophobes, and neurotics undermine it from the inside.” I imagine she’s not everyone’s taste, but amidst the depressing news, I find her optimism somewhat refreshing. Plus, she quotes one of my favorites, Alexis de Tocqueville.

Live sunsets around the world, in case you work right through yours.

You never grow old at the table

Two whole black sea bass and two whole perch have been lurking at the bottom of my freezer, so I finally made whole fish with soy and citrus, an Alison Roman recipe I saved long ago. As you’d expect, if you know her work, it was delicious. I cooked the fish on top of the sliced citrus that didn’t fit in the cavities.

From light to heavy, the next night we had cheesy smoked Gruyere chicken. So good. I’d suggest a green veggie on the side, like roasted broccoli with carrot, red onion, garlic powder, and ground New Mexican chile.

It seems weird to report on Thanksgiving dishes more than a week later, but I feel strangely obliged. I made two cranberry sauces—a traditional New England version and a savory chutney. I always adapt the chutney recipe by adding jalapeños, using maple syrup instead of honey and brown sugar instead of sugar, doubling the ginger, and adding orange zest.

Butternut squash and poblano gratin is always a hit at Thanksgiving. But I don’t think I’ll make my from-scratch green bean casserole again. It’s too heavy and, judging by the leftovers, not a big hit, although it’s might tasty if you give it a chance.

If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’m happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Association Brain Food: 11.24.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

autumn view of the woods with golden and orange leaves on the ground – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityUpcoming association events. Although these events are not free, they’re organized by people I respect and admire—and will be attended by people you’ll love getting to know, like me at People Powering Tech.

  • RevUp Summit on Wed Dec 6 and Thu Dec 7 in Annapolis MD, hosted by Professionals for Association Revenue
  • AWTC Advance on Wed Dec 6 in Arlington VA, hosted by Association Women Technology Champions
  • People Powering Tech on Thu Dec 14 online, hosted by Qiqo Inc. and BJA Solutions for Associations (aka Barbara Armentrout)

Awareness week. TopClass LMS explains how an awareness week gives your members a chance to feel good about themselves, the work they do, and their professional community, and attracts the attention of people who might want to learn more or join your industry.

Event recording release. Good timing by EventMobi because I’ve seen requests on ASAE Collaborate recently for a template like this. Their template documents a person’s consent to be photographed, filmed, or recorded in an online, in-person, or hybrid event or activity, and to have their footage shared.

Threats ahead. Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First warns us that this post he wrote for Naylor is “bleak by design.” In it, he describes the social, technological, economic, environmental, and political factors shaping a threatening decade ahead for the association community. He says you can’t hope your way out of “these perilous and unforgiving situations.” Instead, you must “acknowledge the very obvious dangers we now face” and take “bold action to at least minimize their detrimental impact.”

Next gen marketing. Brian Miller at Multiview explains how to capture the attention of the next generation. His advice is solid, but I’ll add one more tactic: improve your website SEO so people can learn about and find you.

Credit card processor. GrowthZone’s guide to selecting a credit card processor is perfect for those of you who need to understand the players and their roles, terminology, fees, rates, hard and soft costs, and security issues. They also suggest topics to ask about during discussions with vendors.

AI. Did you ever get around to reading President Biden’s Executive Order on AI? If not, here’s the TL;DR association version from Johanna Gundlach at Sidecar.

Off-topic

Practical philosophy. Until around 2010, philosophers couldn’t speak to one another, let alone communicate with the public, says Crispin Sartwell at Los Angeles Review of Books. That’s when some philosophy professors started addressing contemporary issues and writing for general audiences. A return to philosophy of all stripes is what I’ve needed to help me escape from and frame the daily onslaught of troubling domestic and global events.

Purposeful philosophy. A few weeks ago, an episode on the BBC In Our Time podcast about the late British moral philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe sent me on this philosophy bender. I’ve since become a major fan girl of the episode’s guest, the vivacious Rachael Wiseman who teaches philosophy as a discipline that can help us know how to live.

Charity watch. Make sure your favorite nonprofits, employer’s corporate foundation, or other orgs you support aren’t on Focus on Western Islamism’s list of US-based 501(c) charities/foundations that subsidize Hamas.

You never grow old at the table

I only make chicken with mustard sauce—a recipe from David Lebovitz via David Leite—when Jim is away because he’s not a fan of mustard—and I LOVE IT. I’ve been known to grab a spoon of Dijon straight from the jar. The sight turns my husband’s stomach. This excellent dish is best served over mashed potatoes alongside roasted broccoli with carrots, red onion, and garlic powder.

Another favorite while he’s off hunting: gorgonzola, mushroom, and spinach pasta. Poor fella, he’s not a fan of blue cheese either. This exquisite dish includes bacon, onion, red bell pepper, lots of cremini and shiitake mushrooms, garlic, spinach, pasta, heavy cream, lots of Gorgonzola, thyme, salt, and pepper.

I tried a new version of beef stroganoff for Jim’s homecoming (with venison backstrap, tenderloins, and hams in the cooler, yeah!) because it promised one-pot cooking. After sautéing the other ingredients, you add egg noodles to the mix along with beef broth and continue the cooking, instead of cooking the noodles in another pot. As the website says, it’s damn delicious! I made a few alterations: regular instead of sweet onion, sherry instead of white wine, and smoked instead of regular paprika.

On the side, a Brussels sprouts sauté (sliced lengthwise into quarters) with bacon, orange bell pepper, red onion, and garlic.

Another night, per Jim’s request, southern pan-fried flounder. On the side, an asparagus sauté with red bell, onion, carrot, tomatoes, and lemon zest.

Association Brain Food: 11.17.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

gray squirrel perched on a tree, eating a nut – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityProfessional development trends survey. Data about organizations serving adult lifelong learners is hard to find. Please take six minutes (or less) to complete this survey from Leading Learning/Tagoras. The resulting data will help associations understand the professional development landscape, plan learning strategy, and budget for learning programs.

AMS/CRM selection survey. 501Works invites association execs, consultants, and industry partners to participate in a survey about AMS/CRM selection. Your contributions will help identify common pitfalls, communication gaps, and processes that challenge the association community.

Association webinars. TopClass LMS shares lots of tips on increasing the value (and price) of your webinars. The post covers webinar program design, attendee experience, and pre- and post-program activities.

Mentoring programs. The Art of Mentoring’s guide on mentoring in professional associations describes the benefits of mentoring programs, potential pitfalls, and design issues. They touch on topics such as the association’s political structure, employers’ competitive sensitivities, funding, code of conduct, CE credits, matching, and success metrics.

Chapters. Finding members who want to take on the burden of managing a chapter is becoming more difficult. Cecilia Sepp was a chapter relations professional before becoming an association CEO and then founder of Rogue Tulips Consulting. She explains why she’s long advocated for associations moving away from the traditional chapter model.

Content strategy. Tim Stoddart at Copyblogger shares five strategies for creating cornerstone (or pillar) content that readers and Google will love.

Membership. Your AMS should be the utility player on your membership team. Nimble AMS explains how an AMS can help your association recruit, engage, and retain members by helping you better understand members, anticipate their needs, provide a better digital experience, and deliver personalized emails and content.

Free speech. The Hamas/Israel war has brought out the censors on all sides. Jacob Mchangama at Persuasion says free speech defenders must be consistent. “Freedom of expression serves its most important function at times of deep polarization, where the sense of righteous indignation tempts us to silence the viewpoints we hate with scant regard for the collateral damage to democracy, freedom, and tolerance that constitute the necessary precondition for social peace in diverse societies.” Censorship drives dangerous speech underground where it can’t be exposed to discussion or judgment. He asks, “Are we really safer when we know less about what motivates our neighbors?”

Hillary on Hamas. Listen to her experienced take on the ceasefire issue. She knows her stuff when it comes to that part of the world.

You never grow old at the table

I succumbed to the seducements of two packages of gnocchi languishing on my shelves. And, oh boy, did I ever tumble into the deep end with baked gnocchi with tomato vodka sauce and spicy Italian sausage. The sausage was my idea, as was onion instead of shallot, a 14 oz. can each of diced tomatoes and crushed tomatoes, pre-cooking the gnocchi, and not adding pasta (or starchy) water. Wow. I’m about to dig into the leftovers for lunch. Yes, you should be envious, but I bet your waistline isn’t as challenged.

For our side, roasted broccoli, carrot, and red onion with garlic powder and salt.

On a healthier evening, I made Greek-style striped mullet. I found this recipe when I was trying to use up a bottle of Ouzo and it’s become a favorite. We’re finally out of Ouzo, so I use dry vermouth instead.

Another night, another favorite: creamy flounder piccata. On the side, a sauté of asparagus with orange and red bell pepper, onion, garlic, and lemon zest.
