Association Brain Food: 9.15.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Colorado River trail in Rocky Mountain NP – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityMust-read newsletters. I was happy to see Association Brain Food in Lead Marvel’s list of eight must-read newsletters for association professionals. Curated reading lists are the best, right? So, let’s move on to the rest of your weekend reading.

Credentialing support. TopClass LMS wants you to know about the coalition supporting legislation to extend the use of tax-exempt 529 savings plans to association credentialing programs. Add your association’s name to the sign-on letter before they present it to Congress next week.

Boring conferences. Dean West at Association Laboratory bemoans the state of association conferences because “nothing is different” despite associations knowing the same ol’ same ol’ is boring the hell out of attendees. I agree, which is part of the reason I only registered for the trade show at ASAE Annual—the ridiculously high fee for consultants (the membership category for this odd duck) was another reason. The problem, Dean says, is most meeting planners are expected to focus on logistics, not education and experiences, so we get the same design year after year. Yawn.

AMS implementation. Impexium describes three crucial principles that most associations and vendors overlook during an AMS implementation—things that will make your project much more difficult. They explain why and how to get buy-in from staff and executives, how to manage an implementation when you barely have time for your real job, and why you should focus on business outcomes, not processes.

Open Space events. Here’s a cure for boring conferences. Watch how the members of the International Bridge Tunnel & Turnpike Association used the Open Space concept at a recent meeting—and hear why loved it. Thanks to the CEO Patrick Jones who shared this recently in an incredibly informative ASAE Collaborate discussion.

Financial statements. Hat tip to Tip Tucker Kendall, CAE who, also on Collaborate, recommended nonprofitready.org as a primer on accounting and financial statements for nonprofits.

Microcredentials. If you feel like you’ve been seeing more press about microcredentials lately, it’s because researchers see growing support from employers and learners, and higher education sees the potential for revenue and renewed relevance. WBT Systems explains why it might be time for your association to get into the microcredentials business.

Credit card processors. GrowthZone’s guide to selecting a credit card processor is perfect for those of you who need to understand the players and their roles, terminology, fees, rates, hard and soft costs, and security issues. They also suggest topics you should ask about during your discussions with vendors.

Data strategy. Katherine Matthews, CAE, talks to Alexandra Mouw, CAE, about the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ journey to becoming a data-driven organization.

Association Brain Food: 9.1.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

red rock country in Canyonlands NP (I think) - inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Because I’m away most of next week at the Non-Dues-A-Palooza conference, Association Brain Food isn’t publishing next Friday, September 8. Hope to see you back here for the next edition on Friday, September 15.

AI pulse survey. MCI invites you to participate in its AI benchmark survey, a 3-minute pulse survey about the integration of AI technologies within your organization and your members’ interest and aptitude for AI. They hope to provide a benchmark of the current landscape, uncover any potential challenges, and identify opportunities to better equip your members and your association for the future.

Education. Who has the time to learn? Answer: we all do. But sometimes a traditional online program or course doesn’t fit our schedules. TopClass LMS advises associations to offer microlearning programs to busy professionals since they’re more likely to have 10 minutes to spare, not 50.

Gen Z marketing. Many associations were built by and for older generations, says MemberSuite, so you have to work extra hard to demonstrate the value of membership in ways that resonate with younger generations. They describe nine strategies for marketing membership to Gen Z.

Workplace culture. We all know how culture plays a significant role in an organization’s success. But where and how do you even begin to improve that culture? Propel explains how a culture assessment can reveal your organization’s change readiness and its place on the cultural spectrum—from traditional to contemporary to futurist.

Membership trends. MGI’s 2023 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report is ready for download. This is essential reading for understanding trends in membership recruitment, engagement, renewal, dues, value propositions, and more.

Membership budget. Sticking with MGI for a moment, Tony Rossell explains how MGI survey participants made a successful case for increasing their membership marketing budgets.

Membership engagement. Your AMS should be the utility player on your membership team. Nimble AMS explains how an AMS can help your association recruit, engage, and retain members by helping you better understand members, anticipate their needs, provide a better digital experience, and deliver personalized emails and content.

Membership value. Engagement means different things for different members. At Naylor’s Association Adviser, Cathi Hight raises good points about member engagement and explains how to use surveys and focus groups to understand what member segments value.

Project management. Teams that meet for regular debriefs (post-mortems or retrospectives) improve team performance by up to 25%. But these meetings often occur only after things go wrong or big projects end, says Ethan Mollick. He links to research on the best approaches to debriefs, but it’d be easier to read this DelCor post on the project close.

Also worth your time

5 steps to gaining member acceptance, downloads, and engagement for your association’s mobile app. (Mark Wallach, Engagement Mobile Strategies)

Ugly numbers from Microsoft and ChatGPT reveal that AI demand is already shrinking. (Ted Gioia, The Honest Broker)

I bet you’ll see things the way this 16-year-old does, but it’s so damn depressing. She says, “I had a helicopter mom. I found Pornhub anyway.” Also, check out the organization she mentions, Fight the New Drug. (Isabel Hogben, The Free Press)

You never grow old at the table

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

Buy a box of salad greens and get a box of olives for free? Count me in. Since my refrigerator now runneth over with olives, I made Ouzo fish. This time around, I added pepperoncini and fresh oregano, and used ground fennel instead of fresh. I started to make a veggie side dish in a separate pan, but decided to combine everything, so I also added carrots and broccoli stems to the recipe.

Another night, an old stand-by: southern pan-fried striped mullet. On the side, roasted broccoli with red onion, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.

Association Brain Food: 8.25.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

a path through a grassy dune headed to the water at sunrise or sunset – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community“If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.” –Oprah Winfrey

Online programs. Matchbox Virtual Media asks for your participation in a survey that explores how the use of online experiences by associations for membership engagement, education, revenue growth, and other purposes has evolved in recent times. Please take three to five minutes of your time to help with this research.

Membership trends. TopClass LMS highlights findings from MGI’s 2023 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report that they think will interest association education teams. They pull out a few good ideas from survey comments too.

Gen Z and millennials. Another report to add to your reading list is Deloitte’s 2023 Gen Z and Millennial survey. One of its sad findings: 46% of Gen Zs and 39% of millennials feel stressed or anxious at work all or most of the time. Another one: Gen Zs and millennials report increasingly high levels of burnout due to work-related pressures. Managers, check in with your people!

Marketing to younger generations. While we’re on the topic, Mercury Creative Group explains how to build a brand that attracts and retains younger members.

Conference planning. Julius Solaris of Boldpush says don’t even think about planning a conference like last year’s. Too much has changed, including what you’re really selling, attention spans, the need for keynotes, and new abnormal patterns. You should get on his mailing list.

AI prompts. Ethan Mollick thinks the ultimate winners on the AI playing field are organizations that create grimoires. What is this witchcraft he speaks of? He’s referring to “spellbooks” full of generative AI prompts that encode human expertise and unlock AI’s positive potential.

Change readiness. Starkweather Association Services explains how to prepare your team for any project involving change, which is most projects these days. With their guidance, you can better understand and minimize the complications your people might bring to a project—a valuable competency for any career.

Middle managers. At Reworked, Stowe Boyd says it’s time we rethink middle management, especially since 46% of them plan to quit in the next year because of work-related stress. Training in the right soft skills might help.

R/evolution. You are not destined to live in quiet times, says Walter Russell Mead at Tablet. Humanity’s third major technological revolution is leading us into a future more promising and dangerous than any since the dawn of history—and it’s coming faster than you think. Let’s focus on “promising,” huh?

Also worth your time

It’s time to end the toxic U.S.-Saudi relationship—a perspective well worth reading and considering. I swear I’m not becoming an isolationist, but enough is enough sometimes. (Daniel Larison, Eunomia)

The female pickup artists: a new group of influencers is peddling an old strategy, the art of entrapping a man. This is so sad. I hope no one I know is a victim of these power games. Just keep it real, people. (Kat Rosenfield, The Free Press)

15 ways to get back to sleep when you wake at 3 a.m. (Emine Saner, The Guardian)

The cynical personality—the one who constantly complains about “living in hell”—is so tiresome, plus that line of thought is patently untrue. (Haley Nahman, Maybe Baby)

You never grow old at the table

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

What a treat: shrimp scampi pizza on a Friday night. Get yourself a bag of dough from the market. Sauté garlic and lemon zest in butter and oil. Add white wine, basil pesto and shrimp (made in the USA only, please). Remove the shrimp when they’re pink. Spread the right amount of sauce on the dough. Top with slow-roasted or sun-dried tomatoes, shrimp, and mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Bake on high heat for maybe ten minutes. Sprinkle with Italian parsley and red pepper flakes when it comes out of the oven. Eat way too much.

A lighter yet tasty dish: pan-seared tuna with avocado, soy, ginger and lime. Save the leftover sauce and heat it up with brown rice, canned salmon or tuna and any greens you have hanging around for a mighty good lunch.

On the side at dinner, Asian-style eggplant. Sauté eggplant with onion, shiitake, orange bell, red jalapeño, garlic and ginger. Mix sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown/palm sugar and cornstarch (all 2 tbsp except 6 tbsp soy), then add to the veggies with half a cup of chicken broth and cilantro.

An old stand-by you’ve seen here before: southwestern sweet potato skillet. It’s a mix of ground chorizo and turkey, sweet potato, spinach and arugula, onion, poblano, red bell, jalapeño, garlic, black beans, corn, chipotle en adobo, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano, chile powder and cheddar/pepperjack cheese.

Association Brain Food: 8.18.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

tree frog love – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Love. Love will keep us together…

Education programs. TopClass LMS suggests offering peer-to-peer online learning programs. In these standalone short programs, member instructors introduce skills, practices, or hobbies to fellow members. The programs are relationship and community builders since they help members connect with each other on both a personal and professional level.

Strategic planning. Vista Cova’s white paper, Strategic Frameworks: The Future of Strategic Planning, explores how association executives are working with strategic plans in the post-COVID environment. The paper describes ten themes that emerged in their research and includes an appendix with the participants’ strategic frameworks. It’s a must-read.

Mentoring programs. The Art of Mentoring’s new guide on mentoring in professional associations explains how to address potential pitfalls and design issues you might encounter around chapter relations, funding, code of conduct, CE credits, matching, and success metrics.

Silent auctions. Create buzz around your event with a silent auction. Chris Mazzon at Multiview describes what’s involved. My state SAE hosts a successful silent auction every year at our annual conference to raise money for scholarships. If you want to look into doing one of your own, I know a guy who can help.

Hybrid work. Stowe Boyd gives the real scoop on what’s behind those hysterical return-to-work headlines. He suggests an intentional approach to hybrid work that, according to research, is actually working for many employers and employees.

Websites. Brightfind’s guide to association websites is loaded with useful advice on 12 essential web elements for acquiring, engaging, retaining and converting users into loyal website visitors, customers and members.

Thriving (or not) associations. James Young at Product Community describes three fictitious associations on different tracks for the future—one’s traditional, one’s striving and one’s innovative. Which is yours?

Reality check. Teenage girls are struggling with mental health. Trigger warnings may be partially to blame, writes Jill Filipovic at The Atlantic. No shit, Sherlock. They’re a harmful practice for young people who need to learn how to cope in the real world.

Also worth your time

The perils of sponsorship: please be smarter than (not as whorish as) the American Academy of Pediatrics is with AT&T. (Bethany Mande, The Spectator)

How to write AI art prompts for Midjourney and DALL-E , with examples and templates. (Hannah Macready, Hootsuite)

Iran scholars in the U.S. are less interested in seeing the country through the eyes of Iranians and more prone to positioning themselves in an ideological battle between American progressives and conservatives—one in which excessive criticism of the regime in Tehran is considered “right-wing” and even “imperialist.” How ridiculous. Iran deserves all the criticism we can muster. (Arian Khameneh, Tablet)

You never grow old at the table

A tavola non s’invecchia mai.

I found this Italian proverb somewhere in my web travels and think it’s quite fitting for this section, for now. Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

This past week, I only made one dinner and a huge batch of basil pesto. And thank goodness I did, because the dreaded mildew has once again set in so that looks like it for my basil harvest this year. ARRGH! Even the new Israeli variant has fallen victim.

For dinner two nights, we had southern pan-fried flounder alongside roasted broccoli with red onion, garlic powder, lemon zest and parmesan.

Fri 8/18 at 4 p.m.* – The Medici Effect: What Elephants and Epidemics Can Teach Us About Innovation (Book Discussion)

Why do so many world-changing insights come from people with little or no related experience? Charles Darwin was a geologist when he proposed the theory of evolution. And it was an astronomer who finally explained what happened to the dinosaurs. Frans Johansson’s The Medici Effect shows how breakthrough ideas most often occur when we bring concepts from one field into a new, unfamiliar territory and offers examples of how we can turn the ideas we discover into path-breaking innovations. Association Brain Food: 8.11.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

summer pasture – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityAssociation community. I’ve always been an advocate of well-designed, interactive virtual events because many people don’t have the time or money to attend in-person events. But there’s no replacement for conferences. At ASAE Annual, I met new people and hung out with friends and acquaintances. On the expo floor, at industry partner parties, and in restaurants, what a joy it was to be amidst my community. No education sessions for me this time—too expensive!—which is why I’m already looking forward to seeing many of you again at Non-Dues-A-Palooza (NDAP) in Denver next month.

Community as a feeling. Higher Logic reminded me why Annual and NDAP are such a big deal for many of us. They shared a definition of “community” on LinkedIn: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals. They chose this definition because “it reminds us that community isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling.” Yes, our conferences are places, but they’re also where we double-down on this feeling.

Leadership pipeline. In some industries, employers have trouble cultivating and keeping talented professionals. Cutting back or eliminating management training programs certainly doesn’t help. TopClass LMS suggests your association offer management training programs for industry professionals. By educating the next generation of company and industry leaders, you’ll fill your association leadership pipeline too.

Change management. Impexium recommends five strategies for a change management framework. A few of them might surprise you, but they’re essential for technology project success.

Generational stereotypes. Cloey Callahan at WorkLife says, “While there are natural differences due to the environments in which each generation is raised, there are actually far more commonalities.” She points out six harmful myths about quiet quitters, snowflakes and other generational stereotypes deserving of debunking.

The SHEconomy. Meagan Loyst gives the Gen Z perspective on how brands “are tapping into the collective feminine experience vs. just slapping pink on something and saying it’s for women.” She says Taylor Swift and Barbie are quite literally saving the U.S. economy because they take the interests and experiences of women seriously.

Scientific society events. ExOrdo shares key findings from interviews with 27 scholarly societies about their event goals, activities, issues and challenges. Read what they learned about the growth of international audiences thanks to online events—and challenges with online networking and engagement—as well as on-demand online content libraries and problems caused by the lack of integrations.

Procrastination. Hal Hershfield at Behavioral Scientist says you need to have empathy for your future self or you’ll end up traveling to a different future than the one you wanted. If you avoid this time traveling mistake, you can reduce your tendency to procrastinate.

Quick hits

There is no happiness dial. You’re the one responsible for tuning into a good mood. (Nick Wignall)

A moving article about women artists, with a focus on Emily Dickinson and Sinead O’Connor. Please also read the article she links to in Rolling Stone by Shirley Manson about Sinead. (Freya Rohn)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

One of my favorite quick fish dishes: tilefish (or any fish) fillets with spiced breadcrumbs. I added poblano to the mix this time because the deck harvest is coming in.

A day after getting back from Atlanta, I didn’t feel like going to the store, so I turned to the refrigerator and pantry to see what I could throw together for dinner. Voilà: summer linguiça and vegetable pasta. Ingredients, in order, are: linguiça sausage, red onion, red bell pepper, poblano pepper, jalapeño pepper, broccoli stems, garlic, tomatoes, white wine, corn, spinach, arugula, basil, lemon thyme, canned clams and their juice, fettuccine, pasta water, butter and parmesan cheese. There’s enough left over for tonight, yay!

Association Brain Food: 8.4.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

white roses outside a window – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community“One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon—instead of enjoying the roses blooming outside our windows today.” —Dale Carnegie

Non-dues revenue. It’s not so easy to remember to practice the presence and gratitude it takes to enjoy those roses, but I will give it my best shot at ASAE Annual this weekend—as much as my adrenalined mind will allow. I hope to greet and meet many of you there and also at Non-Dues-a-Palooza (NDAP) in Denver in early September. There’s a better chance we’ll have time to sit and smell the roses together at NDAP. Seriously consider attending if non-dues revenue is a concern for your association.

Introverts. Here’s a post by Aaron Wolowiec of Event Garde to share with your introvert friends. I didn’t know I was an introvert until I heard Susan Cain do a keynote at an ASAE Annual long ago. I thought introversion was related to shyness, not a problem for social me. But when I read her book, Quiet, my entire striving life up to that point made sense. I wanted to push it into the hands of every parent. Aaron shares advice to help introverts manage their energy and mind at a hectic event like Annual. He’s my hero of the week!

Mobile apps. Results Direct and .orgCommunity invite your participation in the State of Mobile in Associations 2023 Benchmark Survey, the first and most comprehensive survey of its kind for the association community. Your input will help associations benchmark the use of event, member, and other mobile apps in associations.

Membership pricing. Your association’s recruitment and retention success depend on your membership model pricing. But that’s not all—mission success and financial sustainability ride on it too. Impexium dives deep into membership pricing models to explain when to make a change, how to do the requisite research, what type of models are commonly used, and how to figure out pricing.

Member engagement. TopClass LMS explains how online education programs can help increase member engagement. They describe the essential elements of education programs that resonate with members.

Non-dues revenue partners. Navigate CES describes how your association can improve the customer journey for sponsors, exhibitors and advertisers. They share tactics for the six stages of the business development journey and offer advice for dealing with revenue partner churn and expansion.

AI tools. At the Wall Street Journal <gift link>, Isabelle Bousquette says companies are drowning in too much AI. Employees are confused and overwhelmed by the options, while IT and executives worry about privacy, plagiarism, value and other issues. I imagine associations are going through the same thing right now.

Inspiring purpose. Futurist Peter Diamandis is a proponent for individuals and organizations crafting a Massive Transformative Purpose (MTP). WBT Systems explains how an MTP helps you build a community and create a movement by connecting what your association does to a greater sense of meaning and purpose. Diamandis says an MTP can do wonders for individuals too.

Mission statements. If you’re not ready to grapple with an MTP but need to write a traditional mission statement, GrowthZone has you covered. Their tip sheet goes through the steps of defining your purpose, identifying your target audience, getting input and developing the copy.

Online experiences. The Endocrine Society and Matchbox Virtual Media announced a joint venture to design and deliver online experiences that will drive innovation in the medical, healthcare and scientific industries. I’m interested in seeing what this creative partnership comes up with. They’re starting with a research study to learn what’s working (or not) for associations hosting online experiences. Stop by Matchbox’s booth at ASAE Annual if you want to learn more.

Quick hits

Five things to do to heat up your content marketing game during the summer lull. (Ann Gynn, Content Marketing Institute)

No, you don’t need to learn golf to advance in your career. Per a new study, women leaders can successfully network off the course. (Courtney Connley, Chief)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

Oh my, I do love these smoked Gouda- and chorizo-stuffed jalapeño peppers from Sunny Anderson at the Food Network and everyone else does too. Expect the plate to be cleared.

My Portuguese fish skillet was adapted from these UK and US recipes. I make mine with linguiça, kale, poblano peppers plus all the other ingredients, including catfish, this time. Very robust!

When at the beach, I always have to buy local shrimp and make my shrimp beach pasta with onion, red bell pepper, garlic, diced tomatoes, white wine, shrimp broth (save the shells!), basil and lots of butter. For dessert, key lime pie bought at the seafood market and made by a local baker, yum.

Association Brain Food: 7.21.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

barred own on branch of tree – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityAssociation Brain Food is taking off next Friday, July 28 because I’m away all week at my state SAE conference and a family beach vacation. The next edition will go live on Friday, August 4.

Member education. It’s impossible to predict the skills we’ll rely on in ten years. Some of them don’t even exist now. But TopClass LMS/WBT Systems describes ten skills your members need to learn right now. See how you measure up!

Governance. McKinley Advisors surveyed association executives to understand the characteristics and behaviors that drive next-level board performance and strategic agility. In their report, Next-Level Governance™: Leading with Strategic Agility, they describe the critical elements for reinventing governance so you can position your association to deliver value to your members and industry amidst any disruption.

Workplace culture. You surely understand the extent to which your organization’s culture influences its success. But where and how do you even begin to improve that culture? Propel explains how a culture assessment can reveal your organization’s change readiness and its place on the cultural spectrum from traditional to contemporary to futurist.

Food as fuel for attendees. As someone who’s always thinking about my next meal, Jeffrey Cufaude speaks to my heart (yes, my stomach too) when he encourages facilitators not to overlook food when planning a program. He explains how food is fuel for enhanced attendee energy, attention and community.

AI, inventions and work. I like Benedict Evans’ historical approach to AI and the automation of work. He reminds us that “every time we go through a wave of automation, whole classes of jobs go away, but new classes of jobs get created.” These are good times, folks!

Online community. Online communities are extremely popular with younger audiences. Nimble AMS explains how an online community can help you attract, engage and retain members. They also provide a useful plan for launching and managing a community.

Threads. Twitter lost its magic when celebrities and partisan journalists arrived years ago, and then everyone, including me, started scheduling tweets. But I still enjoy seeing what flows through my home stream because the tweets are from people I actually follow. Unlike on Threads, which, Kate Lindsay at Embedded says, is “a mecca of Millennial brain rot.” Yeah, it sucks.

Just the facts. “The fact is a recent invention,” says Jon Askonas at The New Atlantis. I’d add “relatively” since he traces them back to the 17th century. “The rise of facts was the triumph of a certain kind of shared empirical evidence over personal experience, deduction from preconceived ideas, and authoritative diktat.” He describes the rise of facts—a wonderful trip through history—and their replacement in our age by manipulable data points.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

Shrimp scampi with tomatoes and corn is summer in a bowl. But please only buy American shrimp and not that nasty frozen slave-labor Asian crap—google it. Shrimp should be a luxury.

You don’t see boldly flavored ribbonfish that often. When I do, I like giving it the puttanesca treatment. On the side, summer veggie pesto with zucchini, carrot, broccoli stem, red bell, poblano and onion.

A new party dish: sheet pan quesadillas. I added poblano, jalapeno and garlic to the mix. It’d be smashing with ground chorizo or venison (instead of beef) or filled with Korean-style gochujang pulled pork.

Association Brain Food: 7.14.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

sea turtle on the beach – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityProfessional development. You’re more likely to go to the gym if you’re following a workout plan designed by a trainer, right? Likewise, members and customers are more likely to attend education programs when they’re following a professional learning plan. WBT Systems explains how professional learning plans benefit both your association and members and how to get them going.

Sunsetting programs. Avenue M writes about “the complex journey of phasing out obsolete programs in associations,” especially in the face of resistance. They suggest questions to ask before terminating a program and offer advice for the sunsetting process.

Board management. In an article at the Institute of Corporate Directors, Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First says intentional learning is a non-negotiable requirement for board members. One overlooked source of intentional learning is boardroom dissent. I agree. Healthy human dissent—“sharing contrarian or divergent perspectives”—should be normalized again. Too many people, perhaps following the poor example of politicians and media, have forgotten how to do this respectfully.

Change readiness. Nine times out of ten, humans deserve the blame for technology that doesn’t live up to expectations. Starkweather Association Services’ shares best practices for change readiness that will help you understand and minimize the complications your people might bring to technology or any other change project. Change management chops can make a tremendous difference for projects and for your career.

Event data. PCMA Convene recaps a Convening Leaders 2023 session led by Joe Colangelo of Bear Analytics: “From Stats to Stories—Making Event Data Work for You.” It’s interesting to see how two organizations rely differently on data to market their event to attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors.

Gen Z, AI and marketing. Bill Sheehan at Multiview shares his top takeaways from ASAE’s 2023 MM&C conference related to Gen Z, AI and marketing—fun topics. Differentiate yourself and don’t be afraid to try new things.

Customer/member personas. Mercury Creative Group explains why you should have an ideal buyer in mind when crafting marketing content. They guide you through the steps for creating a persona or avatar who represents a segment of your target audience.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

My sister-in-law gave us a dozen fresh figs, so I made Ina Garten’s fresh fig and ricotta cake, a quick and easy recipe. I whipped heavy cream with a little maple syrup for a topping. But I guess that wasn’t good enough because the next night Jim came home with a pint of vanilla bean ice cream.

A big hit around here is salmon collard curry. You can use any fish (or shrimp) and red or green Indian or Thai curry paste. This time, I added red and orange bell pepper, poblano pepper, garlic, a mix of collards, spinach and arugula, basil, mint and cilantro to the recipe.

A simple spiced breadcrumb topping is always good on fish fillets, especially speckled sea trout. I added fresh basil to the recipe because I had to prune my plants and didn’t have enough for a batch of pesto. On the side, roasted broccoli with parmesan, garlic powder and New Mexican ground chile.

After my periodontal surgery a few months ago, my seafood share included soft shell crabs. But since I was on a liquid diet, I stashed them in the freezer. Defrosted, dried, dusted with flour and sautéed with butter, nothing is better. We enjoyed another favorite for our main dish: creamy piccata swordfish. I added shallots at the start and basil (instead of parsley) and parmesan cheese at the end.
