The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

blue dragonfly on a puffy dandelion stem - – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Women in technology. Association Women Technology Champions (AWTC) invites you to nominate one, two or three women whom you believe should be recognized for their contributions to the advancement of technology in associations. Please don’t dawdle because nominations close this coming Monday (9/6). Who’s coming to mind? Make someone’s day and nominate them right now—and that will make your day too.

Virtual conferences survey. If virtual or in-person conferences are part of your organization’s strategy—whether you’re a non- or for-profit, large or small organization—please complete the Tagoras 2021 Virtual Conferences survey. Your participation will help provide valuable insight into how the role of virtual conferences has changed over the past 12-18 months. The last day to contribute is Thursday (9/9).

The Great Resignation. If colleagues are coming and going at your association, they’re part of a bigger wave of people changing jobs that economists have dubbed The Great Resignation. WBT Systems explains how your association can serve industry employers, jobseekers, professionals new to your industry, and career-downsizing professionals during this challenging time.

Volunteer learning journey. If you’re a component relations, volunteer management or governance professional, dedicate some time to Billhighway’s latest series on the volunteer learning journey. The final post explains how to determine your association’s readiness level for developing a volunteer learning journey and how to get members started on the journey.

Virtual meeting etiquette. Etiquette isn’t just for the dining room table. Achurch Consulting says etiquette is especially useful when navigating new situations, like a virtual meeting. They advise what meeting participants and organizers should do (and not do) before, during and after a virtual meeting.

Hybrid (or whatever) workforce. Your hybrid work plan for employees is not going to happen the way you planned, says Jamie Notter of Propel. Your workforce will be “variably remote—permanently’. He explains what that means and suggests a better management approach than the traditional “command and control” style.

Insights from ASAE Annual. Many conference attendees have good intentions about watching recordings of the sessions they missed. But how many ever watch more than a few? Association CEO Christina Lewellen has raised the bar. She binged the entire ASAE Annual Meeting over a weekend. Her must-read article recognizes the contributions of consultants and ASAE staff, shares advice for attendees and speakers, and recommends some standout sessions.

Strategic thinking. Jorge Barba says if you ask better questions about the challenges your organization is facing, you’ll discover better answers and improve your strategic thinking and innovation capability. I also love his idea for scheduling a “Challenge the Status Quo” day. He told me, “Challenge the Status Quo Day is quite useful when approached with an open mind, though many leaders cringe at the idea of it, which is not surprising.”

Quick hits

  • Yes, there’s hope for you: how to stop overthinking. (Pia Callesen, Psyche)
  • .. a new phishing campaign is exploiting the uncertainty about company policies related to COVID-19 vaccination policy. (Stu Sjouwerman, KnowBe4)
  • For all my webinar-hosting friends and acquaintances: the ultimate checklist for webinar planning. (Mike Agron, Content Marketing Institute)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the irregularly published In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • After hosting a birthday party, we ended up with lots of leftovers. I hate food waste so I came up with an idea for turning some of them into dinner. The chile con queso and pasta salad transformed into a skillet dinner with ground beef/lamb, onions, peppers (red bell, poblano, jalapeno), corn, tomatillos, garlic, spinach (lots), pinto beans and cilantro. Talk about the ideal cheese sauce!
  • Another two-night meal: bluefish and blueline tilefish with coconut red curry sauce and greens. I adapted (and doubled) the original recipe by adding red and orange bell pepper, garlic, julienned collard greens, and finished it with a mix of Vietnamese coriander, Thai basil and cilantro. Served it over jasmine rice.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
