Association Brain Food: 2.10.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

low sunlight slanting through trees – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityMember engagement. Many of us are eagerly awaiting the release of Amanda Kaiser’s book, Elevating Engagement: Uncommon Strategies for Creating a Thriving Member Community, on February 14. If you pre-order the book by the 13th, you can sign up for a free companion workbook.

Member recruitment. Impexium describes the eight elements of an association marketing strategy that will help you recruit more members, such as developing personas, leveraging data, nurturing leads, and more.

Year-round attendee community. You put a ton of effort into planning, promoting and hosting a conference, but once it’s over, you watch as attendees drift away. EventMobi explains how to use a year-round community and content hub to keep attendees connected with each other and with your association.

Generation Z. WBT Systems suggests ways to attract Gen Z to your association by helping them build lifelong learning habits and expand their network. They describe the type of online learning programs that appeal to this generation and other young professionals.

Board development. Follow Jeff De Cagna on LinkedIn this month for his Fit-for-Purpose February posts. Twice a day, he’ll share “ideas, insights, next practices, and resources that will help your association’s board set a higher standard of stewardship, governing, and foresight and become fit-for-purpose.”

APIs. Nowadays, if you’re involved in a technology selection or implementation project, you must understand APIs, unless you’re okay with letting your software live in a silo. Without a basic knowledge of APIs, you could also cost your association a lot of time and money. Empowered Margins describes APIs and their potential in a way that even non-techies can understand.

Trade show costs. Danica Tormohlen at the Trade Show News Network writes about The Exhibitor Advocate’s 2022 Material Handling and Labor Study, which provides benchmarks for trade show labor and materials handling costs in 16 cities.

Quick hits

Google Analytics 4: what it means for your website. (the one and only Ray van Hilst, Yoko Consulting)

Content planning: how to empower your team and fill the calendar with great ideas. (Jenna Buckle, Superpath)

Everything you need to know about sponsorship sales in 2023. (John Bedor, The Trade Show Manager)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

If you like crab cakes and you like fish, then you’ll like fish cakes. I made mine with black drum instead of cod. Because several recipe commenters mentioned the cakes falling apart while frying in the pan, I took one of their suggestions and baked mine instead.

On the side, Brussels sprouts roasted with bacon, red onion and garlic powder, then drizzled with maple syrup and balsamic vinegar. Also, butternut squash wedges roasted with cinnamon, smoked paprika and cayenne.

I forgot about this oldie-but-goodie, baked chicken and mushroom skillet. I served it over brown and Japonica black rice that I made in the pressure cooker with chicken broth and sautéed onion and garlic. On the side, leftover roasted vegetables.
