Good reads for the association community

“Day by day, your choices, your thoughts, your actions fashion the person you become. Your integrity determines your destiny.” ―Heraclitus

Growing a course catalog with a small team. Demand for online learning keeps climbing while head count stays flat. For association education, TopClass LMS suggests the corporate training approach: build a repeatable production system. Among their suggestions: create a course shell you reuse, bring in member volunteers to supply the content, let AI handle first drafts that a speaker then verifies, and retire courses nobody finishes.

Online community content is AI-invisible. Nicole Saunders (Higher Logic) shares highlights from her company’s internal AI study group about community content’s lack of discoverability. AI tools can’t reach it, so they don’t recommend it, even when members and prospects are asking questions. Community managers now have to connect the dots between business goals, tech staff, content plans, and AI readiness.

Before you buy an AI tool. Your board wants an AI strategy. Staff are trying to figure out which tools to use. Dennison & Associates’ guide for associations walks you through a methodical way to size up your options. It opens with a warning: associations tend to buy the tool before they’ve defined the problem. You also get a ten-question checklist for pressure-testing any AI tool purchase before you commit.

Association newsletter course. The Association Newsletter Success Certificate Course from Association Academy covers everything from strategy to delivery. You’ll work through goals and metrics, formatting that fits your audience, design and copy, AI-assisted production, and the technical work that keeps your email out of spam. You can earn up to six CAE credits in six live online classes starting October 22 with Chris Gloede (Ricochet) teaching. Save $50 on registration with the referral code BRAINFOOD.

Fresh thinking for chapters. Peggy Hoffman (Mariner Management), writing on Event Garde’s blog, says the standard toolkits-and-training approach to chapter support asks too much of leaders who are already stretched thin. Among her wise ideas: swap long board commitments for bite-sized volunteer tasks members can say yes to on the spot, then get ruthless about trimming legacy activities that drain energy and deliver little value.

Before the LMS demo. Moira Edwards (Ellipsis Partners) condenses her firm’s ASAE Demo Day webinar into ten practical tips for associations shopping for an LMS. She describes the mistakes she keeps seeing, poses a few questions to answer before you look at a single vendor, and breaks down the three levels of AMS-LMS integration.

Member magazine. If your board keeps asking about magazine costs, this m3Magazines guide hands you the ROI case to bring back to them. It explains how a well-designed publication builds member trust and loyalty, and pulls in non-dues revenue. It also includes a five-point checklist for spotting when your magazine needs a refresh and describes the kind of content that keeps members turning pages.

Exhibitor retention strategy. The fee for booth space is just the first expense for exhibitors. The real cost also includes shipping, travel, lodging, staffing, and client dinners. Back at the office, decision-makers want to know what that investment bought them. Beth Surmont (360 Live Media) describes how associations can help exhibitors get more out of the show. Her list includes a pre-show summit for booth staff, packages built around exhibitor goals, registration questions that reveal who will be in the room, and reports that justify their spend.

The loneliness numbers. Francesco Riganese (Makerstations) rounds up the latest depressing data on workplace isolation, including a 58% jump in the hours remote workers spend by themselves. Millennials report the highest rate of workplace loneliness. Lonely workers are also far more likely to be job hunting. If your members and prospects work remote or hybrid, this is a reason to highlight community and connection when you pitch membership.

If you’re looking for an association job, keep an eye on my “likes” on LinkedIn. I “like” many of the association job postings in my stream, and the more I “like,” the more the algorithm sends my way.

Association Brain Food is a labor of love and always will be. If it’s been useful to you, your team, or your webinar marketing efforts, I’d really appreciate you buying me a beer. Thanks!

Please buy me a craft beer!

You never grow old at the table

We spent the long weekend in Black Mountain, NC, a lively little town where we hiked and visited breweries. I have only one homemade meal to report, but it’s a good one: Caribbean smothered chicken with coconut, lime, and chiles. The recipe comes from Carla Hall’s Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration. A few newspapers reprinted it when they reviewed the cookbook, so it’s easy to track down online. I served the chicken and sauce over brown rice, alongside broccoli roasted with curry powder and lime zest.
