Good reads for the association community

“Nothing is more exhausting than the task that’s never started.” —Gretchen Rubin

Tech friction has a price. TopClass LMS explains how technology debt builds up across an association’s website and the systems behind it until learners and staff feel the pain. A clunky login or a video that won’t play on a phone can give even a motivated learner a reason to quit without telling you why. The post shows how to find those friction points and explains why many fixes don’t require a new platform.

Chapter purpose before structure. Mariner Management shares takeaways from an ASAE Annual Meeting panel that looked at what comes next once an association decides its chapter model needs to change. When volunteers spend their time on the business of running a chapter, they have little energy left for building community. Be sure to read the linked AOTA and NAFA case studies, which show how each association lifted administrative work off volunteers’ plates.

Worrisome membership trends. I look forward to Marketing General’s Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report every year, but this year’s findings are sobering, with membership growth slowing and renewal rates softening. On the brighter side, the report finds that growing associations communicate their value clearly and treat engagement and retention as seriously as recruitment. The report also tracks how associations are responding to generational change and AI.

Hard questions for your board. Jeff De Cagna (Foresight First) revisits a set of board questions he first raised in 2024. His updated versions push boards to accept the discomfort that comes with their service. His three-part series gives you material for candid conversations about what board members owe the people who will inherit their decisions.

Gen Z’s missing network. Cory Smith (The National News Desk) examines why so many Gen Z workers feel disconnected from people who could help their careers. They switch jobs more often than any other generation and miss out on the informal relationship-building older generations picked up through internships and in-person work. As a result, many Gen Zers don’t know where to start. Associations have the mentors and member networks to fill that gap, which gives you a strong pitch for recruiting younger professionals.

Resistance is wired in. Your association can choose the right platform and still watch a change effort stall because staff never get on board. D2L’s guide shows how to prevent that by treating change as a people project from the start. The guide includes advice for bringing colleagues along, spotting early adopters who can win over skeptics, and making new practices stick.

Help exhibitors succeed. Kathryn Deen (Professionals for Association Revenue) says associations can do more to help exhibitors get what they came for. Drawing on advice from event tech and trade show experts, she shows how to learn each exhibitor’s goals early and report results they can use, so a standard booth package becomes a partnership they’ll want to renew.

Sponsors want outcomes. David McMillin (Skift Meetings) talks with Circle’s vice president of events and experiences, Peter Bordes, who says the familiar Gold/Silver/Bronze sponsorship tiers have outlived their usefulness. Bordes recommends asking what each partner wants to achieve and building the package around that answer. He also challenges associations to be honest about whether their tiers serve sponsors or mainly save the sales team time.

You never grow old at the table

My recipe for salmon with coconut green curry sauce is pretty flexible. Use whatever fish and greens you like, red or green curry paste, sweet or hot peppers (or both), and any herbs you have on hand. I keep Southeast Asian-style pesto in the freezer for just this purpose. One batch lasts a long time, so I only have to gather the ingredients once.

On Sunday, I tried a new recipe, chicken with lentils and butternut squash, from the America’s Test Kitchen cookbook Mediterranean Instant Pot. What a flavorful dish and, thanks to the pressure cooker, easy to make. The recipe is behind a paywall, but I found an archived version. On the side, creamed collards deluxe, always so good.
