Association Brain Food Weekly: 4.8.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Branches of crape myrtle in bloom – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityNew member onboarding survey. Dynamic Benchmarking and Kaiser Insights are teaming up again to launch the second edition of their popular New Member Engagement Study and would love your participation. Their research measures the effectiveness of various elements of new member onboarding, orientation and welcoming programs. Associations of all sizes and types have used the study’s insights to improve new member retention. If you never read the first edition of their report, you’re in for a treat—and I bet you’ll be eager to participate in this round.

For-profit professional development ideas worth stealing. WBT Systems scanned the news and discovered several interesting developments in the for-profit professional development world. Check out their ideas for program planning, partnerships, marketing, learning formats and pathways, credentials, and packages.

New member onboarding. If you don’t have a year-long new member onboarding campaign in place, start here with GrowthZone’s onboarding and touchpoint schedule. Don’t assume new members will figure it all out on their own. They might, but if you show you care, you’ll make a better impression than any list of benefits could.

Remote mentoring. One of the best things to emerge from the pandemic is the shift from in-person to online activities, saving lots of time and effort for everyone involved. Achurch Consulting explains how the move to remote/hybrid work has made the need for remote mentorship more important than ever, but it’s also made mentoring more accessible too. They offer tips on finding and working with a remote mentor.

Google Analytics. It’s natural to feel intimidated by the breadth and depth of data and insight residing in your website’s Google Analytics. But where do you even begin to configure and leverage it? Results Direct shares advice for making sense of Google Analytics and the possibilities it can unleash for your association.

New member journey. If you’ve got the basics of onboarding under your belt, it’s time to focus on the first 30-90 days of a new member’s membership journey. Matrix Group suggests thinking of yourself as a host who’s greeting new guests. They outline an effective strategy for onboarding new members, along with communication and content suggestions and an onboarding workflow.

Death to meetings. “Meetings are the mulch of middle management.” You will cringe in recognition when reading Ed Zitron’s helpful diatribe on the predilection pretty much every organization has for scheduling way too many meetings. He describes what drives this meeting mania and what you should do about it.

Quick hits

A road trip teaches four women leaders unexpected lessons—starring four CAEs: Christina Lewellen, Sara Wood, Nicole Araujo and Lindsay Currie. (Christina Lewellen, ASAE)

The last relationship-building event activity you’ll ever need—it’s a good one, promise. (Aaron Wolowiec, Event Garde)

You know how I love a nature web cam. Elizabeth Engel, CAE told me about the nest cam in the National Arboretum where Mr. President and Lotus live with their little chick.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

Striped bass is delicious all on its own. All it needs is a little salt, lemon and butter. But feeling in a Southwest mood, I adapted my spiced breadcrumb topping by sauteing red bell and poblano peppers, onion and garlic along with cumin, cayenne and oregano, then adding melted butter and panko breadcrumbs.

Whenever I get striped mullet in my seafood share, I can’t imagine making anything but my southern pan-fried striped mullet recipe. Yes, that again. Dredge the fillets in flour, then a mix of buttermilk and hot sauce, and then cornmeal and panko breadcrumbs combined with smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. The leftovers make an excellent fish sandwich, especially if you combine mayo and salsa, slather it all over the bread, and add lettuce too.

A casserole recipe is merely a suggestion. When I made this taco casserole, I doubled the beef, added poblano and jalapeño pepper, and threw in some orzo too. Although I’m sure lettuce and tomato on top would have been nice, I served ours with avocado instead.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Eastern bluebird sitting on the top of a fence – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Career changers. With all the job- and career-hopping going on right now, it’s a good time for associations to extend their marketing and educational efforts to career changers. WBT Systems explains how to welcome career changers entering your industry by helping them with career guidance, skills development, and network building.

AMS myths. I’ve got to admit, I still get the heebie-jeebies when thinking about my last AMS implementation—more than ten years ago! Yeah, pretty ugly. But things have changed. Sure, you’ll still hear nightmare scenarios about some systems, but don’t think they’re all that way. Impexium dispels some myths you’ve heard and worries you may have about getting a new AMS.

Online community potential. An article by Lisa Boylan at Associations Now got me so excited about the future of online communities. She talks with Marjorie Anderson of Community By Association and Moira Edwards of Ellipsis Partners about communities becoming more interactive, integrated and, frankly, interesting. Real-time messaging, video chat, better intel for associations—yes, bring it on!

AMS landscape. I want to do a better job of sharing podcast episodes I like, so here’s a good one: The Association Podcast, episode 34 featuring Rob Miller, CAE, general manager of NimbleAMS and Gravitate at Community Brands. Rob’s been on the association and industry partner sides of our community, so he has an interesting perspective on the AMS landscape. Listen to the end to hear his book recommendations. I’ll second his plug for Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, one of my favorite reads of the past few years. Oh, The Association Podcast is hosted by Ben Muscolino of Breezio and AMS Geek, and Jake Toohey and Joe Post of Adage Technologies. Go on and subscribe.

Data security. If I were an association exec, I’d want to make sure my organization was practicing the best data security practices. But if you’re not an expert, you need to know what questions to ask. Start with this concise guide from Wicket that covers practices to avoid, data security training issues, a recovery plan template, and more.

Employer denial. The headline says it all: “Workplaces are in denial over how much Americans have changed.” Alvin Chang at The Guardian says the pandemic experience has given people a different perspective on life: many of us have woken up from our work-obsessed culture. The people returning to the office aren’t the same ones who left, but you probably know that already.

Quick hits

How to help members and attendees manage the emotions that get in the way of participation: “As the creators of experiences, we can circumvent the predictable path of non-participation.” (Amanda Kaiser, Smooth The Path)

The modern war is online. Putin’s Neanderthals produced a deepfake video in which Zelenskyy asks his troops to lay down their arms. (Stu Sjouwerman, KnowBe4)

Watch this pair of peregrine falcons in Manhattan’s Financial District whose four eggs will hatch in a few weeks. (Falcon Cam)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

Fish with mushrooms and rosemary might sound weird, but if you’re preparing black sea bass—or any other meaty fish filet or steak—you might want to check out this Martha Stewart (yes!) recipe. Martha leans too high-brow as usual: I subbed white wine for sake, cremini for matsutake mushrooms and paprika for espelette pepper. Divine, as she might say.

An old standby, flounder with spiced breadcrumbs. Adding sauteed onion, red bell pepper and garlic to the topping makes this dish so good.

I couldn’t resist this “alla vodka” side dish. If you’ve had a good pasta alla vodka, you know what I mean. But this time it’s cannellini beans and kale alla vodka—not as scrumptious as penne alla vodka, but it works.

On Sundays, I have more time to stuff and roll, so I made stuffed flank steak with prosciutto, provolone, mushrooms, herbs and arugula. Delicious. On the side, Brussels sprouts sautéed with bacon, red onion, red bell, poblano, jalapeno and garlic. Before sautéing them, I sliced the sprouts in four unless they were really big.

Professional development market potential. LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report has good news for associations: the corporate C-suite finally understands the value of professional development. The number of training professionals who said their CEOs were active champions of learning jumped from 27% in 2020 to 62% in 2021. WBT Systems highlights other professional development opportunities revealed by the LinkedIn research.

Member profile data. First, the pandemic, and now, the Great Resignation and Reshuffle. MemberSuite describes how a proactive data strategy can keep you in touch with members and customers no matter where they move. They suggest eight ways to keep your database records accurate, complete and up to date.

Generation N. If you were at ASAE TEC, you heard Brain Solis talk about the emergence of Generation N. I’m Gen N. You’re Gen N. Fionta explains why Gen N matters and how your association can meet their expectations—because you will have to meet those expectations.

Quick hits

Ooh, these are good: 100 questions to spark conversation and connection. (Alexandra Franzen)

I open this daily email from a woman in Kyiv with a sense of dread and compulsive curiosity—the war diary of Yevgenia Belorusets.

Beware of QR code scams. (Heidi Mitchell, Wall Street Journal—supposedly this sharable link is viewable to all. I apologize for the tease if it’s not.)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

Our recent seafood share included a bunch of Pirate Pearls oysters. After shucking a few for myself, I steamed the rest and served them with hot brown butter—a recipe from NC’s Vivian Howard, fitting for NC oysters. I served the butter hot from the stove, not chilled, eyeballed the ingredients and omitted the zest.

For Sunday dinner, I pulled out the Instant Pot for char siu pork roast. Because I used 3 pounds of boneless pork shoulder (aka Boston butt), I doubled the marinade/sauce ingredients—and added a hefty amount of spicy sambal oelek to the mix.

On the side, cauliflower faux fried rice with carrot, onion, scallions, celery, shiitake mushrooms, poblano, red bell, jalapeño, oyster sauce, soy sauce and sambal oelek—yup, emptied the refrigerator produce drawer for that one. I also roasted broccoli with red onion, garlic powder and salt.

The fish dish of the week was flounder with creamy (but no cream) jalapeño sauce—same sauce as last week, the advantage of making a big batch. On the side, cabbage sautéed with bacon, mushrooms, red onion, poblano, jalapeno, red bell and chicken broth.

Association Brain Food Weekly: 3.18.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

a view to the sky from underneath spring leaves on a tree branch – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communitySoul music. Violinists across the world play for Ukraine—a minute and a half that will move you to tears. Well, it did me, whether from the beauty or sadness, I don’t know.

Digital transformation strategy. WBT Systems digs into ASI’s 7th annual Membership Performance Benchmark Survey to find out how associations are working through their digital transformation. The successful ones are focusing more on data governance, flexible work models, staff development, and new business and membership models.

Certification wave. During this Great Resignation/Reshuffle, certifications are more in demand than ever. MemberSuite explains how associations can take advantage of the opportunities in the booming credentials market by adopting agile processes, partnering with member companies, tuning up marketing campaigns, and more.

Imposter syndrome. Remote work has exacerbated imposter syndrome for many professionals. Achurch Consulting describes how to spot imposter syndrome on your remote team and how to help employees avoid and overcome it.

No going back. I agree with Mary Byers, CAE, that the pandemic, despite the losses it caused, also had silver linings. She says associations shouldn’t return to “business as usual” or “get back to normal.” Instead, she offers four reasons to embrace the “unusual” opportunities we’ve been given.

Crypto conundrum. I don’t know what to think about all this, but eventually the path forward will become clearer. In the meantime, I’m sharing two perspectives. First, Mark C. Angelos and Jose Triana at Sidecar describe what associations might want to know about the basics and benefits of blockchain and Web3. Ed Zitron, on the other hand, thinks Web3 and crypto shouldn’t get the benefit of the doubt since they may end up creating more problems than they solve.

Micromanaging board. Whenever I hear about a board getting involved with operational issues, I get the heebie-jeebies. Dr. Eugene Fram explains how to move a board out of the weeds and toward a more effective, strategic governance model.

Groupthink. Consensus-based problem-solving groups, like boards and committees, are highly susceptible to groupthink. At Harvard Business Review, Jennifer Mueller, Sarah Harvey, and Alec Levenson lay out three steps groups can take to steer clear of groupthink.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

Last weekend, while some of you were getting snow, here in NC, a cold front moved in. Temperatures dropped during the day to the low 30s and continued to descend into the night. Last call for cozy! A faux-Thanksgiving meal: herby turkey meatballs with gravy, mashed potatoes and cranberry chutney. My herb mix for the meatballs is rosemary, sage and thyme. I also add garlic and an extra egg. My version of the chutney recipe includes jalapeño, orange zest, lots more ginger, and maple syrup instead of honey. Our veggie: broccoli florets roasted with red onion, mushrooms, and garlic powder, sprinkled with parmesan once out of the oven.

Later in the week, two of my favorite fish dishes. Hmm, I bet I say that a lot. First, swordfish with a creamy (but no cream) jalapeño sauce. I added a shallot to the jalapeño sauce this time, an excellent suggestion from the recipe comments. On the side, the usual sautéed greens and a roasted sweet potato. The next night, Thai-style catfish with sweet and spicy green beans.

Association Brain Food Weekly: 3.11.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

focused shot of white birch tree trunks – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityGrassroots advocacy survey. Amy Showalter, ASAE Government Relations and Advocacy Professionals Advisory Council member and author of ASAE’s Creating and Managing an Association Government Relations Program, is asking associations to contribute to the 2022 Grassroots Influence Pulse study. The study assesses trends in grassroots and PAC influence tactics, as well as lawmaker responses to those influence tactics. Past surveys revealed predictive variables that helped advocacy professionals wisely invest their time and resources in strategies and tactics that lead to legislator influence.

Virtual conference attendee’s attention. Is your virtual conference engaging enough to prevent multitasking? Don’t be so sure—and don’t assume that’s an impossible goal. WBT Systems describes the barriers to virtual attendee attention and suggests solutions for keeping your attendees engaged.

Member engagement. Whenever Dean West, FASAE, takes a seat at his blog bar, you can expect a good read. This time, he shares what conservation groups can teach associations about member engagement. Geez, it looks like they have A LOT to teach, especially in the editorial and revenue partnership departments.

Futurist thinking. If you want to think like a futurist, Michelle Russell at PCMA Convene talked to several members of the Association of Professional Futurists about how to become anticipatory rather than reactionary. You’ll need to keep your antennae up and use a mix of intuition, understanding and imagination to plan ahead. This is one of those articles I can see returning to again and again.

Cryptocurrencies. Just as you get the hang of blockchain, now it’s spawning all kinds of new stuff. Sidecar published a series of posts about blockchain-related concepts, like DAOs and NFTs. Start here with their post about cryptocurrencies.

Event NFTs. I find this new world fascinating, so I attended a U.S. Transactions Corp. webinar last week about NFTs. I made a promise to myself that I’d only buy an NFT if I absolutely fell in love with its concept and design—that hasn’t happened yet. At EventMB, Eileen Wennekers explores the many possibilities for event NFTs. I don’t see the real value yet but it’s early days. An NFT has to scratch an itch, solve a problem, or open up an opportunity, not just get stuck onto an event for novelty’s sake. But, hey, that’s just my opinion, today. Watch this space.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

Because we enjoyed leftovers, made do with snacks and ate out, I only made one dinner from scratch last week: NC-style pan-fried striped mullet (dredged in flour, then buttermilk with hot sauce, then cornmeal/panko with cayenne), roasted broccoli (with garlic powder, lemon zest and parmesan) and roasted sweet potatoes.

Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Association Brain Food Weekly: 3.4.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

blue sky and yellow field of grain in Ukraine – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityUkraine. If you’d like updates from Ukraine plus expert commentary, I created a Twitter list of Ukraine journalists, academics and others.

Russian tanks vs. global networks. Steven Johnson points out the contrast between the dismal perspective of the mainstream media on events in Ukraine and the energizing, hopeful perspective he sees from Ukrainians on Twitter. Bear in mind, he wrote this on Sunday 2/27. He believes this difference exists because Twitter picks up “the shifting momentum of a global event like the Ukrainian conflict” more quickly than the media can. He says this is a “conflict between two very different kinds of adversaries: tanks versus networks. Much of the world right now is fighting alongside the Ukrainian resistance through networks—networks of information, finance, travel.” Let’s hope and pray the networks can overcome the tanks. By the way, he’s worth a subscribe.

Useful learning. WBT Systems introduces us to action mapping, an instructional design method developed by Cathy Moore to “save the world from boring instruction.” The focus is on activities that help learners practice the skills they need to improve job performance. Sounds like a practical approach to session and course design, doesn’t it?

Career wellness. Many professionals (maybe you!) are reevaluating why, where and how they work—the disruption caused by a two-year pandemic will do that to you. Finding meaning in work that aligns with your values and goals is a healthy sign of career wellness. Achurch Consulting explains how people working remotely can take a strategic approach to enhancing their career wellness.

SEO advantage. Results Direct describes how WordPress makes it easy for associations to manage reader- and SEO-friendly websites. You don’t have to keep up with ever-changing Google algorithms or be an SEO expert if you use WordPress alongside some handy plugins—they will take care of all that for you.

Crappy hiring practices. At Nonprofit AF, Vu Le has a lot to say about standard (awful) hiring practices. I can just see you reading his post and yelling “Yes!” and “Seriously!” in agreement because that’s what I did and I haven’t applied for a job since 2004. He’s not just tearing things apart; he also suggests how to improve the hiring process.

Cross-team collaboration. The bigger the association, the more likely staff have their heads down focused only on their department’s work because that’s about all they can handle. Suzanna Kelley at McKinley Advisors explains how to begin aligning and sharing work across departments, taking risks together, and making faster progress toward mutual goals.

Networking groups. Lisa Boylan at Associations Now shares a networking success story from the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits. Their EMPOWER groups bring together “like-minded professionals to ‘empower’ one another with shared experience, perspective, support, business development, and inspiration.”

Quick hits

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

I had the urge over the weekend to make a Ukrainian dish for Sunday dinner. I looked at a bunch of halushki recipes, jotted down ingredients, and winged it—easy to do for a dish like this. Instead of making the traditional dumplings, I used ready-made potato gnocchi, which I added to sautéed mushrooms (lots), onion, bacon (lots), garlic, Savoy cabbage, smoked paprika, coriander, salt and pepper along with some of the reserved pasta water. Seriously delicious.

I’ve been stretching my leftovers, so the only other dish I cooked was Mediterranean braised ribbonfish. I love the flavor combo: olives, fennel, red bell pepper, onion, celery, tomatoes and garlic. Get out the wine!

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

patriotic Ukrainian blue and yellow fence – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityState of chapters. If you want to know what’s going on with chapters at other associations and how your chapter network compares, check out the 2022 Chapter Performance & Benchmarking Report from Billhighway and Mariner Management. Use it to benchmark your metrics, inspire innovations in chapter management, and start conversations about the future of chapters at your association.

Compliance training. WBT Systems shares the story of the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) whose compliance training programs delivered a 465% increase in revenue in the last six months of 2021. WBT shares the strategies and tactics resulting in a 693% increase in certificates for TRA in a competitive compliance training market.

Non-dues revenue. MemberSuite looked at five essential member and market needs and came up with a slew of revenue-generating solutions, many of which are probably valuable for your members and market too.

SHRM’s loss of relevance. On the Punk HR podcast, host Laurie Ruettimann and her two guests discuss their disappointment with their association, the Society of Human Resource Management. SHRM isn’t keeping up with its industry, an industry at the center of how people work and how people are treated, led, managed, and empowered at work. “We’re building a new post-industrial revolution era of work, and we’re still getting articles from SHRM about dress code,” said guest Lars Schmidt. Because other groups have emerged to address HR’s present and future, “they’ve lost a whole generation of operators that they’ll never get back.” Guest Joey Price said, “SHRM prides itself on being the voice of HR. And I think right now, it should be the ears of HR.” I get the feeling SHRM excels at selling but is losing at leading.

Evolution of work. I hear stories about association employers that make my skin crawl. I want to shake their staff by the arms and cry, “Flee, go, get out!” I’m sure Jamie Notter at Propel sees the same thing. In writing about the Great Resignation, he takes employers to task for their “it’s all about me” perspective. Employees will continue to leave their frustrating and unfulfilling jobs. It’s up to employers to evolve if they want to hold on to staff. “If you want to win the Great Resignation, then ignore the resignations and start becoming the destination,” says Jamie.

What sponsors want. Partnership Professionals Network (PPN) and Dynamic Benchmarking shared the results of the State of Sponsorship Engagement Survey. Some results may surprise associations—and not in a good way. At Associations Now, Rasheeda Childress interviewed Bruce Rosenthal and Dan Kowitz, co-conveners of PPN, about some of the survey’s findings.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

I had half a pound of Portuguese chouriço left over from another meal that I used as an excuse to make baked almaco jack with chouriço and cannellini beans, although any spicy sausage will do. I always add red bell pepper, garlic and spinach to this recipe. On the side, roasted broccoli with garlic, red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese.

We both love this one-pot meal: chorizo, sweet potato, black beans and spinach skillet. Since I doubled the recipe, I used both ground chorizo (with a ‘z’ this time) and ground chicken.

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Robin (bird) in the icy grass - inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityMarketing maturity assessment. Mighty Citizen launched The Mighty GPS™, a 10-minute self-assessment to measure your association’s marketing maturity. Your maturity score tells you the degree to which your organization is effectively using research, branding, marketing, UX design and content, technology, and your team to achieve business goals.

Agile course development. If you work in association education, perhaps you’ve heard of ADDIE, a model used to design courses. But have you heard of ADDIE’s “fast and furious” relative, SAM? SAM is an agile design and development model for courses, perfect for associations that want to respond quickly to market demands.

ASAE research on change. Jenny Nelson at ASAE highlights three ASAE Research Foundation studies that “provide insight into how leaders can approach change and manage change processes going forward.” I recently downloaded (for free) one of them, Advancing Business-Venture Innovation, because I’ve been enjoying the interviews and articles at Association Ventures Playbook by Barry Barresi, one of the authors of the research study.

Digital value creation. One of those articles is by Mark Dorsey, FASAE, CAE, CEO at the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), about how CSI busted out of narrow mindsets about markets and revenue streams and found new value creation opportunities. He describes how they got going in this new direction and ended up with a successful new product.

Seasoned professionals. People in their 60s, 70s and beyond are not retiring anytime soon. Instead, many are finding more sustainable and fulfilling work. Lisa Bannon at The Wall Street Journal shares what researchers and workplace experts are saying about this trend. What role could your association play in the lives of aging professionals?

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

  • Spiced breadcrumb topping doesn’t sound like anything special, but this one is because of the sautéed onion and bell pepper in it. We had it on baked fillets of black sea bass.
  • Another night we had an old favorite you’ve seen here before: fillets of striped mullet dredged in flour, then in a mix of buttermilk and hot sauce, and finally in a mix of cornmeal, smoked paprika, cayenne and garlic powder. Pan fry the fillets on both sides.
  • On the side, kale and sweet potato gratin. Bonus: cheese. I forgot how much we loved this dish. Don’t worry, dear healthy ones, it’s not that cheesy.
  • On Super Bowl Sunday, we ate an obscene amount of smoked gouda and chorizo stuffed jalapeño peppers. We hardly had room for slow cooker salsa verde chicken. I followed suggestions in the comments and adapted the recipe by sauteing onion, red bell and poblano peppers, and garlic and adding them to the slow cooker along with the chicken; tripling the cumin; doubling the jalapeño; adding oregano; and stirring in corn and pinto beans at the end.
