Association Brain Food: 10.21.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Little Devil's Tower Trail in Custer SP, Black HIlls, South Dakota – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communitySurvey invite. iMIS by ASI invites you to participate in their annual Membership Performance Benchmark Survey to help uncover upcoming trends in technology and digital transformation; membership acquisition, engagement and retention; and association goals and challenges. They’re also going to look at data through a generational lens this year, so that should be interesting.

Hiring lifelong learners. If I were in your shoes, I would only hire lifelong learners. WBT Systems explains why: they will more quickly adapt to change, acquire new skills and knowledge, and continue growing and stretching in new directions along with your association.

Duty of foresight. At Association Advisor, Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First says the “discontinuous next” (conditions of radical uncertainty, volatility and risk) of The Turbulent Twenties is just getting started. These conditions call for a new definition of your association board’s duty of foresight, which “requires [them] to stand up for their successors’ futures through intentional learning, short-term sacrifice, and long-term action.” This duty requires a different type of board member. How will you identify and prepare them for this role?

Association podcasts. Launching a podcast isn’t as intimidating as it used to be, thanks to the resources and people who can help you get started. Association Briefings explains how podcasts benefit associations and their audience, provides tips for starting an association podcast, and reviews the planning process and issues to consider before you dive in.

Member gatherings. Since associations are conveners, Nikki Golden and Nikki Haton Shanks of Association Laboratory share five ways you can gather your people and convene more intentionally and effectively. Many associations learned some of these lessons during the pandemic but forgot them in a rush to get back to normal, ugh. Make sure you read this post.

Event idea theft. At Skift Meetings, Sue Pelletier uncovers an unethical practice that’s been going on for far too long and has frustrated both event planners and other association consultants. She explains how the request for proposal (RFP) has become a vehicle for the misappropriation of someone else’s work.

Content clutter. No one wants to shop in a messy store, so why would they want to browse through a cluttered online learning catalog? They won’t. WBT Systems explains how to eliminate and prevent learning content clutter.

Online community. The most valuable ASAE membership benefit for me is Collaborate, our online community. If your association doesn’t offer an online community for members, Nimble AMS may change your mind. They describe how an online community can help you attract, engage and retain members, plus they lay out a useful plan for launching and managing a community.

Quick hits

Building inclusivity means your events are open to all—and you’re paying attention to an inclusive holiday calendar. (Lowell Aplebaum, FASAE, CAE)

Five things you should always block time for in your calendar. (Katie E. Lawrence, The Minimal Life)

Is small talk at work necessary to succeed? (Cloey Callahan, WorkLife)

High-performing teams don’t leave relationships to chance. (Ron Friedman, Harvard Business Review)

On rescuing yourself from problems, anxieties and struggles. (Noah Cherry, Two Minute Treatise)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

A perfect southwestern skillet dish for the fall, but I don’t have a recipe, only a list of ingredients you add in stages to a jumbo-sized skillet (mine is 14”). Cook ground chorizo and chicken (or turkey) first and then set it aside for later. In stages that make sense to you, add onion, red bell pepper, poblano pepper, jalapeño pepper, garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, chili powder, chipotle en adobo, diced and peeled sweet potato, black beans, corn, spinach, chard, the ground chorizo and chicken again, chicken broth, Monterey Jack, cheddar, and cilantro.

Right before we left for vacation, we enjoyed the always fantastically delicious fillets of sheepshead, simply baked with Herdez Roasted Poblano Salsa Cremosa. Wow, what a tasty time-saving sauce in a jar. On the side, roasted broccoli with red onion and garlic powder.
